Care Info

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun. The Pocomoke Crape Myrtle thrives best in full sunlight, which encourages the most prolific blooming and overall plant health. It requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to produce the best flower display. Insufficient light can result in fewer flowers and less vibrant foliage.

Soil Requirements: Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. This crape myrtle grows best in rich, loamy soil with a pH range of 5.5-7.5. It is adaptable to various soil types, including clay, sandy, and loamy soils, as long as they are well-draining. Adding organic matter, such as compost, can improve soil fertility and drainage, supporting robust growth.

Watering: Requires moderate watering, especially during dry periods. While Pocomoke Crape Myrtle is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry spells to maintain optimal growth and blooming. Water deeply and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering or poorly drained soils can lead to root rot.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-9. This crape myrtle is well-suited to warm, temperate climates. It can tolerate hot summers and is moderately tolerant of humidity. In cooler regions, it may require some protection from severe winter temperatures. Mulching around the base of the plant can help protect the roots during colder months.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering. Avoid excessive fertilization, as this can lead to more foliage growth at the expense of flowers. A light feeding in mid-summer can help sustain the plant during its peak blooming period.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Pocomoke Crape Myrtle benefits from regular pruning to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Pruning encourages new growth and more prolific flowering. It can be pruned lightly to shape or more heavily to rejuvenate an older plant. Avoid "crape murder," which is the severe cutting back of crape myrtles, as this can harm the plant's overall structure and health.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally be affected by aphids, powdery mildew, or sooty mold. Ensuring good air circulation around the plant and proper spacing can help prevent fungal diseases. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with appropriate measures such as insecticidal soap or fungicides. Regular monitoring is key to maintaining plant health.
