Hybrid Lavender

Lavendula intermedia

$28.00 Sold out

| Hardiness Zones 5-9

Lavandula × intermedia is a robust hybrid lavender long valued for its improved tolerance of heat and humidity compared to many true lavenders. Our stock comes from Montrose Nursery, where this selection has proven itself reliably durable in Zone 8 conditions, including the challenging combination of summer heat and humidity that often limits lavender performance in the Southeast.

This plant has been evaluated through the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC/ARM) plant trials, where it demonstrated strong garden performance, good vigor, and long-term survivability under real-world conditions. That trial history matters: lavenders that persist in humid climates are the exception, not the rule.

Like all lavenders, Lavandula × intermedia still requires excellent drainage and full sun to succeed, but when those needs are met, it offers a dependable, long-lived option for gardeners who want lavender without treating it as a short-term experiment. It performs well in lean soils, raised beds, and dry borders, and is especially useful where airflow and drainage can be ensured.

For gardeners in the Southeast who have struggled with lavender in the past, this is one of the most reliable places to start.

Flower/Foliage

Flowers

Lavandula × intermedia produces long, elegant flower spikes that rise well above the foliage in early to mid-summer. The blooms are carried on sturdy, upright stems and are typically longer and more loosely arranged than those of English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), giving the plant a slightly airier, more architectural look in flower.

Individual florets are small and tubular, packed closely along the spike, and open in shades of soft lavender to deeper violet-purple depending on selection and growing conditions. The flowers are highly aromatic, with a classic lavender fragrance that is strong, clean, and persistent—well suited for cutting, drying, and use in sachets. Flowering is generous and often extended, especially when spent blooms are removed, and is highly attractive to bees and other pollinators during peak summer activity.

Foliage

The foliage of Lavandula × intermedia forms a dense, rounded mound at the base of the plant. Leaves are narrow, linear, and softly textured, coated with a silvery-gray sheen that reflects light and helps the plant cope with heat and drought. This fine, cool-toned foliage provides strong contrast to darker greens in the garden and remains visually tidy even outside of bloom.

In Zone 8, the foliage is evergreen to semi-evergreen, maintaining structure through most winters. During colder spells, some leaf dieback may occur, but plants typically recover quickly in spring. The leaves are strongly aromatic when brushed, releasing the familiar lavender scent that makes the plant as useful as it is ornamental.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
