Livistona chinensis, the Chinese Fan Palm, carries large, bright green fan leaves whose segments droop at the tips like a fountain, on a trunk that usually stays short for years. Native to southern Japan, Taiwan, and the coast of southern China, the palm is grown throughout the warm world and is moderately cold hardy, at home outdoors in coastal gardens from Charleston, South Carolina southward, in sun or half shade.
Here in Aiken the Chinese Fan Palm survives in protected corners of the garden but takes freeze damage most winters, which is the honest reason we list the palm for reference rather than growing a bench of them. Gardeners along the coast and in the lower South have better luck. A reference listing for a palm we have offered.
