Bring luminous sunshine to your garden with Lonicera ‘Sulphurea’, a rare golden-flowered form of the beloved native trumpet honeysuckle. Unlike the common red-blooming varieties, this selection bursts into cascades of soft, buttery-yellow tubular flowers that glow against its rich green foliage from late spring through summer. The nectar-rich blooms are irresistible to hummingbirds, butterflies, and native pollinators, making it both an ornamental showpiece and a wildlife magnet.

A deciduous twining vine, ‘Sulphurea’ grows vigorously to 8–12 feet tall with a graceful spread of 3–6 feet, perfect for training onto trellises, fences, and arbors. Hardy in USDA Zones 4–9, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, provided they are well-drained. Once established, this honeysuckle is low-maintenance, drought-resistant, and long-lived, making it an easy choice for both cottage gardens and modern landscapes.

Flower/Foliage

The flowers of Lonicera ‘Sulphurea’, often called the Yellow Trumpet Honeysuckle, are a striking departure from the scarlet-red blooms of typical Lonicera sempervirens. Each blossom forms a slender, elongated trumpet-shaped corolla that can reach up to 1.5–2 inches long, gracefully flaring at the tips into five subtle lobes. The blooms cluster in tight whorls at the ends of stems, creating an elegant, tiered display that repeats through the season.

Their coloration is the cultivar’s most distinctive trait: creamy lemon to soft butter-yellow tones that brighten as the flowers mature. This pale, glowing hue not only offers a more delicate aesthetic but also contrasts beautifully against the vine’s deep green, ovate leaves. The overall effect is a plant that looks sunlit even on overcast days.

Blooming begins in late spring and continues well into summer, with occasional repeat flushes into early autumn when conditions are favorable. The flowers are nectar-rich and lightly fragrant, exuding a subtle sweetness that draws in hummingbirds, butterflies, and native bees. Unlike some invasive honeysuckle species, ‘Sulphurea’ is well-behaved, producing ornamental blooms without aggressive spread.

Once pollinated, the flowers give way to clusters of small, round red berries, adding another layer of seasonal interest and providing food for birds.

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
