The original white form, and the better plant. Loropetalum chinense covers itself in fragrant strap-petaled white flowers in early spring and eventually builds into a layered small tree that no compact purple selection will ever match.

This Chinese evergreen shrub in the witch hazel family can become almost tree-like with age, reaching fifteen to twenty feet on a layered, wide-spreading frame. The leaves are small, dark green, and slightly rough, held densely enough to read as a solid mass from a distance. In early spring the whole shrub covers itself in white flowers built from narrow filamentous petals, four to a flower, giving the fringed effect that runs through the whole witch hazel family and a light sweet fragrance to go with it. That fringe is where the common name Chinese fringe flower comes from, though the name Chinese fringetree is more properly applied to another plant entirely, Chionanthus retusus.

The genus name is a small piece of precision: Loropetalum from the Greek loron, a strap or thong, and petalon, petal, describing exactly what you see. Hamamelidaceae puts this shrub in company with the witch hazels, Fothergilla, Corylopsis, and sweetgum, and the family resemblance is obvious once the flowers open. The wild range runs across southern China, Japan, and northeastern India.

Many purple-leaf and pink-flowered forms of this species have become very popular in recent years, to the point where most gardeners under a certain age have never seen anything else. This is the standard white-flowered form, occasionally seen in southern gardens where it has been grown for many years, and it is a quieter and in our view better plant: the white against dark green is cleaner than the pink against burgundy, the fragrance is stronger, and the mature layered habit is something the compact colored selections never achieve. Our propagation stock was taken from George's yard, off a plant of exactly that old southern kind. In China the species is ji mu, and leaves, flowers, and roots all enter traditional practice, chiefly as a hemostatic. Chewed leaves were a field remedy for staunching a small wound, and the plant carried uses for burns, dysentery, and diarrhea as well. The chemistry behind that is a heavy load of gallic acid tannins and flavonoids.

Plant in sun or semi-shade in soil that is well-drained but not droughty. Acid soil suits best, as it does most of the family. Growth is fast when young, so decide early what you want: left alone the shrub builds into a broad layered small tree worth standing under, and pruned it holds as a dense screen or a large informal hedge. Prune right after flowering, since buds form on growth made later in the season. Good with camellias, Osmanthus fragrans, Illicium, and hellebores beneath, and worth siting where the early bloom can be seen from a window, because it arrives before most of the garden has decided to wake up.

Design Notes

Decide early what you want from this shrub, because growth is fast when young. Left to develop, the habit becomes a broad layered small tree of fifteen to twenty feet, worth limbing up and standing beneath. Pruned regularly, the same plant holds as a dense evergreen screen or a large informal hedge.

White against dark green reads cleaner than the pink-on-burgundy of the modern colored selections, and the fragrance is stronger. Site where the early bloom is visible from indoors, since it arrives well before the rest of the garden.

Good with camellias, Osmanthus fragrans, Illicium, and Chimonanthus praecox for a fragrant winter and early spring planting, with hellebores and autumn fern below.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

white flowers of narrow strap-like petals, lightly fragrant, early spring

Flower. Clusters of white flowers built from four narrow strap-like petals, giving a fringed or spidery look, smothering the branches in early spring and lightly sweet-scented. Worked by early bees.

Fruit. Small woody two-parted capsules, as in the rest of the witch hazel family, splitting to eject seed. Ornamentally minor.

Foliage. Small, dark green, slightly rough oval leaves held densely and evergreen through winter, on a layered wide-spreading frame that turns nearly tree-like with age.

Care

Light. Sun or semi-shade. Flowering is heaviest in good light; light shade suits the hottest gardens.

Soil. Acid, humus-rich, well-drained but not droughty. Alkaline soil brings on chlorosis, as it does across the witch hazel family.

Water. Steady moisture, especially while young. Established plants take ordinary summer dryness but resent a hard drought.

Pruning. Prune immediately after flowering. Buds form on growth made later in the season, so a late cut removes next spring's display. Limb up gradually if you want the small-tree form.

Hardiness. USDA zones 7 to 9. In zone 7 give shelter from cold drying wind; a hard freeze can take the flower buds in an exposed position.

History & tradition

In Chinese practice the plant is ji mu, and leaves, flowers, and roots are all used. The dominant traditional application is hemostatic: chewed fresh leaves were a field remedy pressed onto a small wound to stop bleeding, and decoctions carried further uses for burns, skin infection, dysentery, and diarrhea, with the herb classed as cooling and detoxifying.

Analysis has identified a heavy load of gallic acid tannins alongside flavones and other phenolics, which is consistent with the astringent and wound-closing tradition. Laboratory work reports antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Research is genuinely preliminary and there is essentially no human clinical evidence; one study has also examined gastrointestinal irritation from concentrated extracts, which is worth knowing.
