Willow-Leaf Dwarf Waxmyrtle – A Fine-Textured Native for Sunny, Sandy Sites
Morella pumila ‘Willow Leaf’ is a distinctive, fine-leaved selection of the Dwarf Waxmyrtle, a native evergreen shrub found in the fire-adapted pinelands of the southeastern United States. Formerly known as Myrica pusilla or Myrica cerifera pumila, this species is now classified under the genus Morella, reflecting updated botanical understanding.
This dense, spreading shrub forms low, ground-hugging colonies by way of underground runners, making it ideal for naturalistic plantings, erosion control, or as a native groundcover. The ‘Willow Leaf’ form, introduced by Woodlanders from a selection made in Wheeler County, Georgia, stands out for its narrow, elongated, willow-like leaves, offering a uniquely elegant texture not typically seen in the species.
Like other Waxmyrtles, the leaves are aromatic when crushed, and female plants produce small, dark, waxy berries—similar to those of the larger Morella cerifera—which provide valuable winter food for birds. Adapted to sandy, acidic, well-drained soils and full sun, this plant thrives in tough environments, especially where native, drought-tolerant, and low-maintenance options are desired.
