Chinese Bayberry

Myrica rubra

$79.00
New
Edible

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-10

Also known as Chinese Bayberry, Yumberry, or Waxberry – current stock is all female.

If cherries and cranberries had a botanical lovechild with the moodiness of a plum and the antioxidant punch of a superfruit—this would be it. Native to the misty mountains of East Asia, Myrica rubra is a fruiting evergreen tree revered for centuries across China and Japan for its vibrant, tangy-sweet berries and elegant form.

The ‘Wuzi’ cultivar is a standout selection—either a newly selected form from the famed Dongkui-growing region or a hybrid of Dongkui and Biqi. Its name, Wuzi, translates to “Dark Purple” in English—an homage to its richly pigmented fruit, which is darker and tastier than Dongkui, though slightly smaller. In its native region, Wuzi ripens about five days earlier than Dongkui, making it an early-season treat prized for both flavor and ornamental beauty.

Here at Woodlanders, Yangmei has always held a special place in our hearts. We’ve nurtured a beautiful mature specimen in Aiken for years, quietly admiring its evergreen grace and seasonal magic. But it’s been over two decades since we’ve been able to offer this elusive gem to our customers—until now.

Thanks to the meticulous work of our new partner, Plant Propagator (@yangmei.us)—the leading voice for Yangmei cultivation in the U.S.—we’re proud to reintroduce this rare species to American gardens.

Why it’s worth the wait:

  • Shimmering, evergreen foliage with a soft, lanceolate shape
  • Female cultivar of a fruiting, dioecious species (male needed for pollination)
  • Earlier ripening, darker, more flavorful fruit than Dongkui
  • High in antioxidants and adored in East Asian cuisine
  • Prefers acidic, well-drained soils and a little patience

A note for the determined gardener:

Yangmei is not for the faint of heart. It’s slow to establish and sensitive to transplant, but once settled, it’s remarkably resilient. Those who commit will be rewarded with a botanical jewel that bridges the ornamental and the edible—and fruits that rival anything you’ll find at a market.

Evergreen

Flower/Foliage

Flowers:

The flowers of Myrica rubra are subtle yet botanically fascinating. Blooming in late winter to early spring (typically February to March), the tree is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are borne on separate plants.

  • Appear in small, catkin-like clusters, usually in the leaf axils. They're pale yellowish to reddish in color and resemble tiny tassels.
  • Much smaller and more discreet—reddish-green and tucked close to the stems.
  • Wind is the primary pollinator, though insects may play a secondary role. Fruit production requires proximity to a compatible male plant.

While not showy in the traditional garden sense, these flowers mark the quiet start of the Yangmei's season and hint at the fruit to come.

Fruits:

The real star of the show, Myrica rubra fruits are a highly prized delicacy in East Asia, ripening in late spring to early summer (typically May to June, depending on climate).

  • The fruit resembles a small lychee or oversized raspberry, measuring 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Each berry is round to slightly flattened, with a distinctive bumpy, bead-like surface texture. The skin ranges in color from deep crimson to dark purple-black when fully ripe.
  • Inside, the juicy flesh clings tightly to a single seed. The flavor is complex—sweet-tart, slightly floral, and faintly resinous, like a cross between a cranberry, cherry, and pomegranate with a hint of bayberry spice. The flavor deepens as the fruit darkens.

The fruit is often eaten fresh, but it is also dried, fermented, juiced, or preserved in traditional East Asian cuisine.
  • Rich in antioxidants (especially anthocyanins), Vitamin C, and anti-inflammatory compounds, Yangmei is considered a functional food in China. Modern studies have explored its anti-cancer, cardio-protective, and anti-diabetic properties.
  • While beloved by humans, the fruit is also attractive to birds and other wildlife. Timely harvest is recommended to prevent loss to your feathered neighbors.

Site Selection

  • USDA Zones 8–10 (marginal in 7b with protection)
  • Full sun to part shade (minimum 6 hours of direct sun for fruiting)
  • Well-draining, acidic soil is essential (pH between 4.5–5.5 preferred)
  • Yangmei does not tolerate soggy soil. Avoid low-lying areas or clay soils. Raised beds or berms may help in heavier soils.

Watering

  • Water deeply and consistently during the first 1–2 years while the root system establishes.
  • After establishment, reduce watering; Yangmei is moderately drought-tolerant once mature.
  • Avoid overwatering, especially in heavy soils.

Fertilization: Yangmei is sensitive to over-fertilization and salt buildup.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
