Oleander 'Double Yellow'

Nerium oleander 'Double Yellow'

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-11

The hardiest yellow oleander in cultivation, and one of the few that come in yellow at all. Of the 400+ named oleander cultivars, the genus naturally produces white, pink, and red — yellow is the aberration, and a fully double yellow is rarer still. This is the old French selection that locked the color in.

After the 1984 freeze that hit -9°F across much of the Southeast, Plant Delights surveyed which oleanders had survived. Most hadn't. This one had — burned hard but back the following spring with full vigor. It has held its reputation as the cold-hardy yellow ever since: reliable through zone 8 in the open, root-hardy through zone 7b with shelter, where it dies back and resprouts to bloom on new wood the same season. Aiken plants reach 8 feet and stay evergreen.

Flowers are soft primrose to buttery yellow, fully double, rose-like, and lightly fragrant, in clusters at the branch tips from late June through September. Glossy dark green leathery leaves in whorls of three. Heat-tolerant, drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant, deer- and rabbit-proof, indifferent to lean soil. The classic Mediterranean coastal plant doing exactly what a Mediterranean coastal plant does.

A toxicity note belongs in every oleander listing: all parts contain cardiac glycosides and are poisonous if ingested. Practical garden risk is low — the bitterness keeps animals off, and human poisoning cases are rare. As the existing Woodlanders catalog has put it: poisonous, but not likely to be ingested except by beach goers who choose oleander sticks to cook wieners. Don't grill on oleander.

For the southern coastal gardener, the heat-and-drought designer, the container gardener north of zone 8 willing to overwinter indoors, or anyone who has been told yellow oleanders don't really exist.

Flower, Fruit and Foliage

Flowers: Fully double, rose-like, 1½–2" across, in clusters of 5–15 at branch tips. Soft primrose to buttery yellow, slightly ruffled, lightly fragrant. Bloom: late June through September, with sporadic later flowering in zones 9+. Blooms on new wood — late-winter pruning increases shoot count and flower production. Visited by bees, butterflies, and occasional hummingbirds.

Foliage: Narrow lance-shaped leathery evergreen leaves, 5–8" long, in whorls of three around upright sparingly branched stems. Glossy dark green above, matte below. Holds clean color year-round in zones 8+; may bronze or partially defoliate during zone 7 hard winters before regenerating in spring.

Light Requirements:
Nerium oleander "Double Yellow" thrives in full sun. For the best flower production, ensure the plant receives 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. While it can tolerate partial shade, too little sun will reduce the number of blooms.

Soil:
Oleanders are adaptable to a wide variety of soils, but they perform best in well-draining, moderately fertile soil. They can tolerate sandy, loamy, or even poor soil conditions. Ideally, the soil should be slightly alkaline to neutral (pH 6.5–7.5). Amend with compost or organic matter for better growth if the soil is low in nutrients.

Watering:
Oleanders are drought-tolerant once established, but regular watering will ensure healthier growth and better blooms. Water deeply when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil feels dry, especially during hot or dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can lead to root rot. It’s better to let the soil dry out slightly between watering sessions.

Temperature and Humidity:
Nerium oleander "Double Yellow" is hardy in USDA zones 8–11 and can tolerate temperatures down to 15°F (-9°C). In colder climates, it's best to grow the plant in a container so it can be moved indoors during winter months. This plant prefers warm, dry conditions and can tolerate low humidity once established.

Fertilization:
Fertilize the plant in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage vibrant blooms and healthy growth. If desired, feed again in mid-summer with a light application to maintain its strength. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can result in excessive leafy growth with fewer flowers.

Pruning:
Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove dead, damaged, or leggy stems. Regular pruning will help control the size of Nerium oleander and encourage bushier, more compact growth. You can also deadhead spent flowers throughout the season to promote continuous blooming.

Propagation:
Nerium oleander "Double Yellow" can be propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings taken in late spring or summer. Place the cuttings in water or soil to root. Seeds are also an option, but cuttings are preferred to maintain the double-flowered traits.

Pests and Diseases:
Oleanders are generally resistant to most pests and diseases. However, they can occasionally suffer from scale insects, aphids, or spider mites. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure proper drainage to avoid root rot, and watch for oleander leaf scorch, a bacterial disease that can be spread by insects.

Toxicity:
Nerium oleander is highly toxic to humans, pets, and livestock if ingested. All parts of the plant, including the sap, are poisonous, so handle it with care, especially when pruning. Use gloves, and ensure that children and pets do not consume any part of the plant.

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
