Nerium oleander is among the oldest shrubs in cultivation, grown around the Mediterranean since antiquity and named from the Greek neros, watery, for the streamsides and washes where oleander grows wild. The dark green, leathery, lance-shaped leaves sit in tidy whorls of three along long, sparingly branched stems, lending the shrub a clean, upright presence in every season.

This form flowers pure white, the clusters opening in early summer and continuing over a long season, softly fragrant and luminous at dusk. White oleander has a cooling, formal quality that plain green foliage sets off beautifully, and the color reads especially well in bright seaside light.

Oleander has always been kept at arm's length. Every part of the plant is poisonous, a caution carried in old folk warnings against whittling oleander wood into skewers for cooking over a fire. That toxicity is also what makes the shrub reliably deer-resistant and one of the most trouble-free plants for hot, exposed ground.

In the landscape, white oleander makes an excellent large evergreen for hedges, screens, and coastal plantings, tolerating salt spray, drought, and reflected heat once established. In colder regions grow the shrub in containers and move under shelter for winter. Pair with silver-leaved Mediterranean companions such as lavender and rosemary, or use as a bright backdrop to deeper-colored borders.

Design Notes

Plant 'White' as a large, sun-loving evergreen for hedging, screening, and coastal exposures, where the shrub reaches ten to twelve feet and holds a dense, rounded form. The white flowers glow at dusk and against dark foliage, making the shrub useful for lightening a hot, bright boundary.

Combine with lavender, rosemary, and gray-leaved perennials for a Mediterranean feel, or let white oleander serve as a calm foil to stronger colors nearby. Site away from paths used by children and pets, since every part is toxic, and overwinter potted plants under cover where frost is hard.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Single, pure white

Flower. Pure white, trumpet-shaped blooms two to three inches across, borne in showy clusters at the branch tips from early summer into fall, with a light, sweet fragrance.

Fruit. Paired narrow follicles four to seven inches long, ripening brown and splitting to shed silky, wind-borne seed; toxic like the rest of the shrub.

Foliage. Evergreen, leathery, lance-shaped leaves four to eight inches long in whorls of three, glossy dark green above and paler below, a crisp foil for the white flowers.

Care

Light. Full sun for the best flowering; part shade is tolerated with fewer blooms.

Soil. Well-drained soil of almost any kind, including poor, sandy, alkaline, or salty ground.

Water. Water deeply while establishing; mature plants are strongly drought tolerant and resent soggy soil.

Pruning. Shape in late winter or early spring and deadhead to prolong bloom; wear gloves, as the sap is toxic.

Hardiness. USDA zones 8 to 10, hardy to about 15F with occasional dieback in hard winters; mulch roots in borderline areas.
