Neviusia alabamensis

Alabama snow-wreath is one of the Southeast's rarest native shrubs and one of the easiest to grow, a combination that ought to put the plant in far more gardens than it occupies. In spring the arching, thicket-forming branches foam with feathery white flowers, and the trick of them is that there are no petals at all: the show is pure stamen, dozens of white filaments per bloom spraying out against five small greenish sepals, like little bottlebrushes of light along the stems.

A member of the rose family, snow-wreath keeps company with kerria and jetbead in the tribe Kerrieae, and shares their trick of petalless flowers. The genus honors the Reverend Reuben Nevius, an Alabama clergyman and amateur botanist who found the plant on a limestone bluff above the Black Warrior River near Tuscaloosa in the late 1850s; Asa Gray described and named it in 1858. The epithet alabamensis fixes the plant to that first home ground.

In the wild, Neviusia alabamensis is genuinely rare and oddly scattered, clinging to calcareous bluffs and wooded limestone slopes in a handful of counties in northern Alabama, barely into Georgia and Tennessee, with a strange disjunct outpost in the Ozarks. Conservation assessments rank the species as imperiled, the small populations often clonal and shy of setting seed. Growing a nursery-propagated plant is a quiet way to keep an uncommon native in gardens rather than leaving the whole story to a few threatened wild colonies, and the Woodlanders stock traces to the J. C. Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, a fitting home for a scarce Southeastern shrub.

For all that rarity, snow-wreath is an obliging garden shrub. Give the plant well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, and the suckering, arching habit fills in to a graceful thicket four to eight feet high, undemanding once established and untroubled by pests. Prune right after the spring bloom, since the flowers come on old wood, and remove suckers if the colony wanders too far. Set snow-wreath at a woodland edge, in a shrub border, or in a mass where the early feathery white can be enjoyed up close, and enjoy a piece of Southern botanical history that most gardeners have never seen.
