1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 6-9

This rare and unusual plant native to the southeastern U.S. is a small evergreen shrub in cultivation. In it's native swamp habitat it becomes a vine on Pond Cypress (Taxodium ascendens) trees where it grows high up the tree under the loose outer bark and sends out horizontal branches which appear to come from the cypress! It has showy compound racemes of little white bell-like flowers and narrow dark green leaves about 1 inch long. Grow in acid soil as you would a related Azalea, Rhododendron. or Blueberry.

Evergreen

Flower/Foliage

Flowers: In early spring, the plant erupts with showy, pendulous racemes of delicate, bell-shaped flowers. These small white blooms—resembling upside-down porcelain thimbles—dangle gracefully in elongated clusters, often 3 to 6 inches long. Each raceme is composed of numerous individual blossoms that add an airy elegance and a soft, sweet fragrance to the garden. The floral display draws in early pollinators and offers a striking contrast against the plant’s dark foliage.

Foliage: Pieris phillyreifolia boasts elegant, leathery, evergreen leaves that are narrowly elliptic and measure around 1 inch long. The dark green foliage is finely textured, lending the plant a refined, understated presence even when not in bloom. Leaves are arranged alternately along the stems, with a slight sheen that catches the light and enhances its year-round appeal. New growth may emerge with a subtle reddish tint before maturing to deep green.
