Evergreen

Flower/Foliage

The foliage of Pyrrosia lingua 'Kei Kan' is its standout feature, showcasing strap-like, leathery fronds with a glossy surface.

Leaves are typically dark green and can grow 6–10 inches long, depending on growing conditions.

The texture is thick and slightly fuzzy due to a fine layer of trichomes, which help the plant retain moisture.

New growth emerges in a lighter green, providing seasonal contrast, and the foliage remains evergreen, making it a year-round attraction.

The upright, tongue-shaped leaves form a dense, compact clump that is both elegant and easy to maintain.

Pyrrosia lingua 'Kei Kan' is an attractive evergreen fern cultivar known for its distinctive strap-like, leathery leaves. Native to East Asia, this fern thrives in woodland gardens, shaded rockeries, or as a houseplant. Its hardiness and unique texture make it a sought-after plant for adding greenery to shaded spaces.

Sunlight:

  • Prefers partial to full shade. Direct sunlight may scorch the leaves.
  • Ideal for shaded garden areas, woodland settings, or bright, indirect light indoors.

Soil:

  • Thrives in well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
  • Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0).
  • Can tolerate rocky or sandy soil, making it suitable for shaded rock gardens or vertical planting in crevices.

Watering:

  • Maintain consistently moist soil, but avoid waterlogged conditions, which can cause root rot.
  • Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • During the winter, reduce watering but do not let the soil dry out completely.

Fertilization:

  • Fertilize during the growing season (spring to early fall) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks.
  • Avoid over-fertilizing, as this plant does well in low-nutrient environments.

Temperature & Humidity:

  • Hardy in USDA zones 7–10. Can tolerate mild frost but thrives best in temperate climates.
  • Requires high humidity to thrive, especially when grown indoors. Use a pebble tray or humidifier if the air is dry.
  • Protect from harsh winds and freezing temperatures in cooler regions.

Pruning:

  • Remove any yellowing or damaged fronds to maintain a tidy appearance.
  • Minimal pruning is needed, as this fern naturally maintains a compact, attractive growth habit.

Pests & Diseases:

  • Generally pest-resistant, though it may occasionally attract scale or spider mites indoors. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
  • Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot and fungal issues.

Propagation:

  • Propagate by division in early spring.
  • Ensure each division has a healthy portion of rhizome and roots for successful establishment.

Special Care Notes:

  • Pyrrosia lingua 'Kei Kan' is epiphytic in its natural habitat, meaning it can grow on rocks or tree trunks. Mimic these conditions by using a mix of orchid bark, peat, and perlite if planting in containers.
  • Perfect for terrariums, shaded walls, or as a ground cover in shaded garden areas.

Summary:

Pyrrosia lingua 'Kei Kan' is a low-maintenance fern that brings lush greenery to shaded spaces. With proper care, it will thrive as a distinctive addition to gardens or as an elegant houseplant, adding texture and interest year-round.
