Ruellia coccinea belongs to the acanthus family and comes from the Caribbean, native to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, where the plant grows as a scarlet-flowered subshrub in warm, humid woodland. The Spanish common name, Yerba Maravilla, reads roughly as marvel herb, a fitting nod to the near-constant show. Through the whole of summer R. coccinea produces slender tubular flowers about an inch long, each opening into five spreading scarlet lobes, borne in clusters from the upper leaf axils and unfurling in succession from early summer until the first frost.

That flower shape is no accident. The narrow scarlet tube is precisely the architecture a hummingbird's bill and tongue are built to enter, and hummingbirds treat a settled plant as a fixed point on their daily route. On a warm afternoon in full flush, the traffic around the flowers is considerable, with swallowtails and long-tongued native bees working the blooms alongside the birds. Deep green, glossy, ovate leaves three to four inches long lend the whole a lush, tropical-adjacent presence that sets off the scarlet.

The plant is more substantial than the phrase summer perennial suggests. In Zone 9 and warmer R. coccinea behaves as a woody subshrub, building a rounded, open-branched mound of three to four feet, sometimes taller where frost never reaches. In Zone 8 the top may die back in a hard winter and return with vigor from the roots in spring, a reliable perennial by a slightly different route. A cut back at midsummer pushes a fresh flush of growth and flowers that carries the display well into autumn.

One point is worth making plainly. Some Southern gardeners pass the genus by, having learned to distrust Ruellia on account of R. simplex, the Mexican petunia that has colonized Florida ditches and wetlands. The two share a name and a family; they share neither habit, temperament, nor growth strategy. This one stays where planted and earns a place among the best of the late-summer hummingbird plants.

Design Notes

Site R. coccinea where the scarlet flowers are visible from a seat or a window and the hummingbird traffic can be watched at close range, since the plant earns space most fully when the show is actually seen. In a part-shade border the subshrub works at mid to back position, giving late-season bulk and color after spring companions have quieted. The scarlet reads best against dark-foliaged neighbors, with deep green Camellia or Fatsia for a backdrop, and the glossy, tropical leaves make an easy match for other subtropical subjects in the summer bed. Zone 8 gardeners planting for succession can pair the plant with Hibiscus mutabilis for matching late-season scale, letting the two carry the border together into October.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Scarlet tubular flowers about 1 inch long with five spreading lobes, in clusters from the upper leaf axils, early summer to frost.

Flowers. Tubular and scarlet, about 1 inch long with five spreading lobes, borne in clusters from the upper leaf axils and opening in succession from early summer through the first frost. The tubular scarlet form is precisely matched to hummingbird foraging, and the flowers also draw swallowtails and long-tongued native bees. A midseason trim brings a fresh flush of flowering growth.

Foliage. Ovate, glossy green, opposite, 3 to 4 inches long, substantial enough to give a lush, tropical-adjacent backdrop for the flowers. Older stems turn semi-woody while young growth stays soft and green, forming a rounded, open, slightly airy mound that suits a mixed border.

Care

Light. Part shade suits the plant best, with morning sun and afternoon protection giving the best mix of flowering and foliage. The subshrub tolerates more sun than most understory plants where moisture stays steady, but afternoon shade is strongly advised in the Deep South, and deep shade cuts flowering sharply.

Soil. Moist, humus-rich, and well drained. Growth is best in organically rich ground that holds moisture without staying wet; amend lean or sandy soil with compost.

Water. Regular moisture through the growing season. This is not a drought-tolerant plant, especially while establishing, so mulch well to hold moisture and steady the root zone. Flowering falls off under prolonged drought stress.

Pruning. Cut back by a third to a half in midsummer, after the first flush, to bring compact regrowth and a second wave of flowers before frost. In Zone 8, cut dead stems to the ground in late winter and let the plant resprout; in Zone 9 and warmer, light spring shaping keeps the habit from going leggy.

Hardiness. USDA Zones 8 to 10. A woody subshrub in Zone 9 and warmer, root-hardy and returning from the base in Zone 8. Generally trouble free, though spider mites may appear in hot, dry spells, which steady moisture helps prevent.
