A shade-tolerant evergreen with sharp elegance, vivid berries, and centuries of European lore.

Ruscus aculeatus, commonly known as Butcher’s Broom, is a distinctive, low-growing evergreen shrub native to the woodlands of Southern Europe and the Middle East. Long valued for its unusual structure, resilience, and history, this slow-growing plant offers both ornamental charm and cultural significance in shaded gardens and drought-prone landscapes.

What appears to be glossy, spine-tipped leaves are actually flattened stems called cladodes, which serve the same function while adding a unique architectural texture. On female plants, bright red berries appear in late fall to winter—borne directly on the center of these cladodes—creating a striking contrast against the dark green foliage and adding a splash of color to the winter garden.

These seed-grown plants include both male and female individuals, unlike many cultivated clones in the U.S. that are unisexual and therefore do not fruit. With the right pairing, berry production is likely, making this an excellent addition to those seeking winter interest in shady or difficult garden spaces.

True to its name, Butcher’s Broom has deep roots in European folk tradition. Its tough, wiry stems and bristled foliage were once tied into brooms used by butchers to sweep scraps from their stalls—hence the name. Today, it continues to prove its utility by thriving under heavy shade, dry soils, and root competition—perfect beneath trees or in spots where other ornamentals struggle.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
