If you’ve ever wanted a shrub that looks like a conifer having an airy, pink-flowering daydream, this is it. Tamarix ramosissima (often called tamarisk or saltcedar) is a deciduous shrub/small tree with fine, scale-like leaves that read “cedar” from ten feet away, yet it drops its foliage in winter. That contradiction is part of its charm: conifer-like texture without being a conifer.

Rubra’ is grown for its rosy-pink, plume-like panicles that dress the branch tips in late spring (often carrying on into early summer depending on climate). The bloom effect is soft, hazy, and surprisingly luminous—like pink smoke caught in the branches.

The horticultural story

Native to Eurasia (a broad band from parts of southeastern Europe through western/central Asia), tamarisks evolved where water can be episodic, soils can be alkaline or salty, winds are common, and summers can be punishing. That background explains why this plant became a staple in places that demand resilience—coastal exposures, dry sites, and lean soils—and why it earned a reputation for tolerating salinity and drought better than most ornamental shrubs

Important legal + ecological note

Tamarix ramosissima is regulated as a noxious weed in some areas due to invasive behavior—including being listed under North Dakota law (distribution/sale prohibited; landowners required to control/eradicate). Please check your local regulations before purchasing or planting, especially in western states and near waterways.

Flower/Foliage

The flowers of Tamarix ramosissima ‘Rubra’ appear in late spring as soft, feathery plumes that seem to hover along the branch tips like pink mist. Each inflorescence is composed of countless tiny, five-petaled blossoms densely packed along slender, upright racemes. Individually, the flowers are delicate and star-like—barely a quarter inch across—but together they create a dramatic, clouded effect.

Color is a clear rosy-pink to shell-pink, deeper than the species, giving ‘Rubra’ its name and distinguishing it from paler selections. As the buds swell, they show a richer, almost carmine tone before opening to softer blush-pink petals. The effect is layered: deeper pink buds, open flowers in mid-tone rose, and fading blooms paling toward near-white as they age.

The plumes themselves are typically 2–4 inches long and borne profusely along the current season’s growth. Because the foliage is so fine and scale-like, the blooms appear to float above the shrub’s airy framework rather than sit heavily upon it. When backlit by late afternoon sun, the flowering sprays glow with a translucent quality, giving the entire plant a light, vaporous presence.

Up close, the blossoms offer fine detail—minute filaments and pale anthers extending subtly beyond the petals—but from a distance, the plant reads as a wash of pink haze. In mass, the effect can resemble flowering heather or a soft veil of color drawn through the landscape.

The bloom period is generous in warm climates and may extend into early summer, especially with adequate sun. As flowers fade, they dry delicately and give way to small seed capsules, maintaining textural interest even after peak bloom.

The overall impression: not bold or tropical, but atmospheric—like pink smoke drifting through silver-green branches.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
