Trachycarpus wagnerianus, Wagner's Windmill Palm, is known only in cultivation and reached the West from Japan; many botanists treat the palm as a compact form of the common Windmill Palm, T. fortunei, and the two share hardiness and culture. The difference is in the bearing. Every part is stiffer and smaller, the fans held rigid like opened hands, so the whole palm reads as refined and formal where the common Windmill Palm looks loose. The Southeastern Palm Society's Hardy Palms for the Southeast singles out that stiffness as the palm's chief virtue, and notes the slower growth that keeps a specimen in scale in a tight spot for many years.
Woodlanders grew Wagner's palm for the collector who wanted a Windmill Palm with better manners. Well-drained soil, shelter from north wind, and ordinary patience. A reference listing for a palm we have offered.
