A unique hybrid of two North American species, Vaccinium 'Hodnett' combines the wild resilience of V. fuscatum (commonly known as black highbush blueberry) with the fruiting power of V. corymbosum, the classic highbush blueberry. The result? A tough, productive, and regionally adapted shrub that’s right at home in the acidic soils and humid summers of the Southeastern U.S.

This upright, moderately vigorous shrub bears clusters of medium-sized, dusky blue berries that ripen in early to mid-summer. The fruit has a balanced sweet-tart flavor that holds up beautifully in pies, preserves, or straight from the bush—if the birds don’t get to them first.

Foliage is lush green through the growing season, transitioning to warm reds and oranges in autumn. Semi-deciduous in mild climates and fully deciduous in colder zones, Vaccinium 'Hodnett' offers year-round interest and habitat value for native pollinators, songbirds, and gardeners alike.

Flower/Foliage

Fruit:

Produces medium-sized, deep blue berries in loose clusters. The flavor is balanced—sweet with a mild tartness—ideal for fresh eating or culinary use. Berries typically ripen in early to mid-summer, depending on climate. Excellent for attracting songbirds if not harvested early.

Flowers:

Blooms appear in early to mid-spring, with delicate urn-shaped, bell-like flowers in pale pink to white. Flowers are mildly fragrant and are highly attractive to native bees and pollinators.

Foliage:

Leaves are oval to lance-shaped, with a glossy, medium green finish in spring and summer. In fall, foliage transitions to shades of burnished red, orange, and deep burgundy, adding ornamental appeal.

Care Info

Read full care instruction manual here.

Light:

Plant in full sun for the best fruit production. It can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter regions, but yields may be reduced.

Soil:

Prefers acidic, well-draining soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Sandy loam or organically rich soils are ideal. Avoid heavy clay unless well-amended.

Watering:

Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering, fruit development, and dry periods. Mulching helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool.

Mulching:

Apply a 2–3" layer of pine bark, pine straw, or wood chips around the base of the plant, keeping mulch a few inches away from the stem to prevent rot.

Pruning:

Minimal pruning is needed the first couple of years. Once established, prune in late winter to remove weak or crossing branches and to encourage airflow and productive new growth.

Fertilizer:

Use a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants (like azaleas or camellias). Apply in early spring and again after harvest if needed, but avoid over-fertilizing.

Pollination:

'Hodnett' is partially self-fertile, but it will produce more and larger berries if planted near another Vaccinium variety that blooms at the same time.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
