September is a difficult month to write for. The garden is still technically in summer but the light has shifted — lower, more golden, arriving at an angle that changes everything it touches. Cassia corymbosa reads this shift and responds to it. While most summer shrubs are winding down, this one is just beginning, producing dense corymbs of deep golden-yellow flowers at the ends of its branches with an enthusiasm that seems almost contrarian given the season.

Native to the grasslands and gallery forests along the Río de la Plata in Argentina and Uruguay, it has been grown in warm-climate gardens long enough that its origins are often forgotten entirely. That's a shame, because the ecology of the Southern Cone — the windswept Pampas, the subtropical gallery forests pressing up against open grassland — explains a great deal about why this plant is the way it is: upright, fast-growing, sun-hungry, and adapted to the kind of dramatic seasonal shift that September in the garden approximates, at least in spirit.

The distinction from its close relative Cassia bicapsularis is worth understanding before you plant both, which you should. C. corymbosa blooms a full six weeks earlier — September rather than November — and is meaningfully more cold hardy, surviving zone 7 winters with adequate siting and reliably root-hardy through zone 8. Where bicapsularis closes the season, corymbosa bridges summer and autumn, its golden clusters appearing just as the first Salvia purples are deepening and the ornamental grasses are beginning to catch the light differently. Grown together, the two create a Cassia succession that carries warm-climate gardens from September through the first hard frost — which is, by most measures, an excellent arrangement.

The cylindrical seed pods that follow are architecturally satisfying in their own right, persisting on bare branches through winter. The butterflies find it reliably. The taxonomists, as with its sibling, continue to debate whether it belongs in Cassia or Senna. We remain diplomatically agnostic.

Flower/Foliage

Flowers
Deep golden-yellow, five-petaled, approximately ¾ to 1 inch across, borne in dense, upright corymbs at the branch tips. Blooms mid to late September through October, or until hard frost. Bloom time distinguishes it clearly from C. bicapsularis, which flowers November onward. An important late-season nectar source; Cloudless Sulphur and Sleepy Orange butterflies use it as both nectar source and larval host.

Foliage
Pinnately compound leaves with 3 to 4 pairs of ovate to elliptic leaflets, each approximately 1 to 1½ inches long — smaller and darker green than C. bicapsularis. Growth habit is upright and somewhat more compact than its relative. Foliage drops with cold weather in Zones 7–8; persists in warmer climates.

Seed Pods
Cylindrical pods, 3 to 4 inches long, follow the flowers and persist through winter on bare branches — adding modest structural interest in the dormant season.

Care Info

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun for optimal growth and abundant blooming. It can tolerate light shade but will flower less profusely.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil and is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Incorporating organic matter such as compost can improve soil fertility and drainage.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods and the growing season. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, it can tolerate some drought, but it performs best with consistent moisture.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 8-11. Prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. It is frost-sensitive, so in cooler climates, consider growing it as an annual or providing winter protection.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. An additional application of compost or well-rotted manure can enhance soil fertility.

Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Light pruning helps promote new growth and a tidier appearance. Remove dead or damaged branches as needed.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Suitable Environment: Ideal for garden beds, borders, and as a specimen plant. Its bright yellow flowers and attractive foliage add a tropical feel to any landscape. It is also a magnet for butterflies, making it a great addition to butterfly gardens.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
