Polygala x dalmaisiana, the sweet pea shrub, is a fast-growing evergreen hybrid of two South African species (P. oppositifolia and P. myrtifolia), grown for a nearly year-round show of orchid-like flowers on an open, informal frame.

The flowers are the whole point: a rich purplish pink, each carried on two winged, petal-like sepals that surround a fringed white-to-purple crest, so the bloom reads like a tiny sweet pea or a small orchid. In mild climates the shrub flowers almost continuously, peaking in spring and summer, and the nectar draws bees and butterflies.

The foliage is dull to deep green, an inch or two long, on a loose, open, rounded shrub of three to five feet. The evergreen frame makes a quiet backdrop for the constant flowers, and the plant takes well to a container or the front of a sunny border.

Long grown in California but still little known in the southeastern United States, the sweet pea shrub is well worth trying in the milder areas. Give full sun to part shade and well-drained soil, water to establish and then only moderately, and shear lightly after the main flush or cut back harder in late winter to keep the plant full. Shelter from hard frost at the cold edge of the range.

Design Notes

An almost ever-blooming evergreen for mild gardens. Use the sweet pea shrub in a mixed border, a foundation planting, a container, or a water-wise Mediterranean bed, where the near-continuous orchid-like flowers can be enjoyed at close range. The loose, open habit suits an informal planting and pairs well with other sun-loving, drought-tolerant companions. Give full sun and sharp drainage, shear to keep the shrub full, and treat the plant as a fresh, little-known choice for the milder parts of the Southeast where it is still rarely grown.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Purplish-pink pea-like flowers with a white crest, most of the year

Flower. Rich purplish-pink, pea-like flowers about an inch across, each with two winged sepals framing a fringed white-to-purple crest, so the bloom reads like a small sweet pea or orchid; carried in clusters at the stem tips, lightly fragrant, and nearly year-round in mild climates with a spring-to-summer peak. A draw for bees and butterflies.

Foliage. Dull to deep green, lance-shaped leaves an inch or two long, evergreen, on an open, loosely rounded frame that sets off the constant flowers.

Care

Light. Full sun to part shade; full sun gives the most bloom, with a little afternoon shade welcome in fierce heat.

Soil. Well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral; enrich lean ground and avoid heavy, waterlogged soil.

Water. Keep evenly moist to establish, then moderately drought tolerant; let the soil dry slightly between waterings.

Pruning. Shear lightly after the main flush to keep the plant tidy, and cut back harder in late winter to renew a leggy shrub.

Hardiness. USDA zones 8 to 10; protect from hard frost, or grow in a container to move under cover.
