Podocarpus macrophyllus is an evergreen conifer that is grown as a shrub or small tree in many southern U.S. landscapes. This Asian species has leaves that are several inches long and about 1/4 inch wide.

The variety 'Okina', a relatively recent introduction from Japan, has leaves with linear white variegation.

Little known in the U.S., it has been offered elsewhere in very small sizes at a high price. We thank Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery for our start of this plant.

Flowers

  • Appearance: As a conifer, Podocarpus macrophyllus 'Okina' does not produce traditional flowers. Instead, it develops reproductive structures in the form of inconspicuous, cone-like elements.
  • Seasonality: Male cones release pollen in spring, and female cones mature later, often adding subtle ornamental interest.

Foliage

  • Appearance: The foliage is the star feature of 'Okina,' with its unique, variegated leaves. New growth emerges as creamy white, providing a striking contrast against the mature soft green leaves. This variegation creates a layered, almost two-toned effect that adds depth and dimension.
  • Texture: The leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and smooth, with a slightly leathery feel. They grow densely along the stems, contributing to the plant’s refined and compact appearance.
  • Evergreen Habit: Maintains its foliage year-round, ensuring consistent visual appeal in any season.
  • Size: Individual leaves measure 2–4 inches long, with an elegant, fine-textured look that pairs well with both formal and naturalistic gardens.

The combination of subtle cone structures and dramatic variegated foliage makes Podocarpus macrophyllus 'Okina' a standout choice for gardeners looking to add texture, contrast, and sophistication to their landscapes.

Planting Requirements

  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. For the best variegation, provide bright, indirect sunlight or partial shade in hotter climates.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Adaptable to sandy, loamy, or clay soils as long as drainage is adequate.
  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring or fall when temperatures are mild.

Watering

  • Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish roots.
  • Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent watering during prolonged dry periods. Avoid waterlogging.

Fertilization

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and vibrant variegation.
  • Mulching with organic material helps retain soil moisture and adds nutrients as it decomposes.

Pruning

  • Prune lightly to shape the plant or control size as needed. Best done in late winter or early spring.
  • Remove dead or damaged branches to encourage healthy growth and improve the overall appearance.

Growth Habit and Size

  • A slow to moderate-growing evergreen shrub or small tree with a compact, upright habit.
  • Reaches a mature height of 6–10 feet and a width of 4–6 feet, making it ideal for hedges, screens, or container planting.

Pests and Diseases

  • Generally pest-free and disease-resistant. Occasionally, it may encounter scale insects or spider mites; treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap as needed.
  • Proper spacing and good airflow help minimize the risk of fungal diseases.

Special Features

  • Foliage: The standout feature of 'Okina' is its striking, variegated foliage. New growth emerges creamy white and gradually matures to a soft green, creating a dramatic, layered effect. The foliage is narrow, lance-shaped, and smooth, giving the plant a refined texture.
  • Evergreen Habit: Retains its beautiful foliage year-round, making it a reliable option for consistent greenery and structure.
  • Growth Style: Dense and upright, lending itself well to both formal and informal landscapes.

Winter Care

  • Hardy in USDA zones 7–11. Protect young plants from frost in cooler zones by applying a layer of mulch around the base and covering with frost cloth during cold snaps.

Landscape Uses

  • Excellent as a specimen plant, hedge, or privacy screen due to its compact, vertical growth habit.
  • Works well in containers or as a backdrop for more colorful plants in mixed borders.

Additional Tips

  • Protect from harsh, direct sunlight in very hot climates to avoid scorching the variegated foliage.
  • Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot; ensure soil drains well.

Summary
With its unique variegated foliage, year-round interest, and adaptable care requirements, Podocarpus macrophyllus 'Okina' is a stunning addition to any garden or landscape, offering elegance and versatility in both formal and informal settings.
