This is one of William Bartram's oaks. He came upon the tree on his travels through the southeastern backcountry in the 1770s, and the botanical name still carries his hand, Quercus hemisphaerica Bartram ex Willd., the species epithet meaning half-a-globe, for the little domed cap that sits like a skullcap on the acorn.

The trade calls them Darlington oak. Whatever the name, these are the dry-land half of a long-running confusion: the laurel oaks come in two kinds, and where Quercus laurifolia takes the wet bottoms, hemisphaerica takes the high, sandy ground, the longleaf sandhills and dry hammocks, flowering a couple of weeks behind the swamp cousin. The leaves are the surprise on an oak, narrow and smooth-edged and willow-slim, glossy and laurel-like, with never a lobe in sight.

The trees are semi-evergreen, holding that polish straight through winter and trading the old leaves for new only as spring pushes them off, so a Darlington oak is never quite bare. What sells them is speed: they throw shade fast, which is why so many southern streets and squares are roofed in them. The honest catch is the other end of that bargain, since a fast oak is rarely a thousand-year oak, and these tend to soften and decline where the long-lived white oaks would still be hitting their stride.

Plant Darlington oak for the shade you want in this decade, not the next century, and the tree will not disappoint: a fast, near-evergreen canopy for a Southern lawn, street, courtyard, or naturalistic planting on high, sandy ground. Give full sun and sharp drainage, allow room for a fifty- to seventy-foot crown, and pair with other sandhill and dry-hammock natives. The acorns feed jays, squirrels, deer, and turkeys, one more reason the tree earns a place in a wildlife-minded Southern garden.

A fast, near-evergreen canopy for a Southern lawn, street, courtyard, or naturalistic planting on high, sandy ground, chosen where quick shade matters more than century-long permanence. Give full sun and sharp drainage, allow room for a fifty- to seventy-foot crown, and pair with other sandhill and dry-hammock natives such as longleaf pine, turkey oak, and wiregrass. The acorns feed jays, squirrels, deer, and turkeys, adding wildlife value to the shade.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Yellow-green catkins, spring

Foliage. Narrow, willow-slim, smooth-edged, glossy laurel-like leaves with never a lobe, two to four inches long; semi-evergreen, held through winter and shed only as spring growth pushes them off.

Flowers. Monoecious and wind-pollinated in spring, the males in slim yellow-green catkins, the females tiny in the new leaf axils; no scent or show, just the start of the acorns.

Acorns. Small, round, dark, in a shallow saucer of a cup with the domed half-a-globe shape behind the name; ripening over two seasons in the red-oak manner and taken quickly by jays, squirrels, and deer.

Care

Light. Full sun to part shade; fastest and densest in full sun.

Soil. Well-drained, sandy soil; thrives on high, dry ground and tolerates a range of textures.

Water. Water to establish, then drought-tolerant; little supplemental water needed on suitable ground.

Pruning. Prune when dormant to build a strong young framework and remove dead or crossing wood; the fast growth rewards early structural training.

Hardiness. USDA zones 7 to 9; semi-evergreen, holding foliage through Southern winters.
