Peacock Moss
Selaginella uncinata
| Hardiness Zones 8-10
Peacock Moss is not moss but a very low-growing spreading fern relative. It has distinctive scale-like leaves clothing decumbent stems which spread and form patches in moist, shady sites. It is unique for the irridescent metallic blue-green foliage and makes a nice filler between flagstones on a shady walkway or by a garden water feature. It is native to China and is a fascinating and eye-catching addition to any garden or indoor collection. Its delicate, fern-like fronds shimmer with shades of blue-green, and under the right light, you’ll catch glimpses of iridescent peacock-like hues—hence its name!
This creeping perennial thrives in moist, shady environments, making it perfect for terrariums, shady garden beds, or even as a ground cover in woodland settings. Its vibrant foliage adds texture and color to any space, offering a soft, velvety feel to the touch.
Selaginella uncinata prefers consistently moist soil, partial to full shade, and humid environments—making it an excellent candidate for indoor gardens or low-light areas. With its unique color and easy-care nature, it’s a must-have for plant lovers looking to add a bit of enchantment to their collection.
