Baptisia megacarpa, the Apalachicola or bigpod wild indigo, is a rare and remarkable native of the floodplains and forested slopes of the Florida Panhandle, southeastern Alabama, and southwestern Georgia. The species grows on sandy ridges and stream terraces in the Chattahoochee River drainage, finely tuned to that particular corner of the South.
A perennial of moist, well-drained soil, the Apalachicola wild indigo lifts tall spikes of large, creamy flowers in spring, followed by the oversized seed pods that name the plant: megacarpa means large fruit. Bees handle the pollination, while the genus's quinolizidine alkaloids defend the foliage from grazing and most insects, though weevils still prey on the seeds. The pods ripen dark and stay ornamental into autumn.
Rare in the wild, with only a few populations left and a critically imperiled status in Georgia, the Apalachicola wild indigo faces pressure from logging, habitat loss, and river damming. Growing the plant in a sunny to lightly shaded native garden, in deep, moist, well-drained soil, is both a garden pleasure and a small act of conservation for a piece of regional biodiversity.

What to expect upon delivery
All our plants are sold in 1-gallon sizes, though the height of each plant can vary depending on its growth rate and seasonality, typically ranging from 1/2 to 2.5 feet.
Each plant is carefully packaged with its roots enclosed in a secure plastic bag containing moist soil, forming a compact root ball. To ensure safe transport, the box is padded with recycled newspaper, providing both stability and eco-friendly protection from weather during shipping.
