Peacock Moss is not moss but a very low-growing spreading fern relative. It has distinctive scale-like leaves, clothing decumbent stems which spread and form patches in moist, shady sites. It is unique for the irridescent metallic blue-green foliage and makes a nice filler between flagstones on a shady walkway or by a garden water feature.

It is native to China and is a fascinating and eye-catching addition to any garden or indoor collection. Its delicate, fern-like fronds shimmer with shades of blue-green, and under the right light, you’ll catch glimpses of iridescent peacock-like hues—hence its name!

This creeping perennial thrives in moist, shady environments, making it perfect for terrariums, shady garden beds, or even as a ground cover in woodland settings. Its vibrant foliage adds texture and color to any space, offering a soft, velvety feel to the touch.

Selaginella uncinata prefers consistently moist soil, partial to full shade, and humid environments—making it an excellent candidate for indoor gardens or low-light areas.

With its unique color and easy-care nature, it’s a must-have for plant lovers looking to add a bit of enchantment to their collection.

Selaginella uncinata, or Peacock Spikemoss, is admired for its delicate, fern-like fronds that radiate a unique blue-green hue. When exposed to the right light, these fronds shimmer with an iridescent, peacock-like sheen, giving the plant its common name. The foliage is soft and velvety to the touch, growing low to the ground and spreading horizontally, making it an excellent ground cover or accent plant in terrariums and shaded garden beds.

Care

Light:
Peacock Spikemoss thrives in partial to full shade. Direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves, so place it in a shaded or low-light area, indoors or out.

Water:
This plant loves moisture! Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging. It enjoys high humidity, making it perfect for terrariums or humid environments. Mist regularly if kept indoors to maintain humidity levels.

Soil:
Selaginella uncinata prefers well-draining, rich, organic soil that retains moisture. A peat-based mix works well, and the plant benefits from a layer of mulch if grown outdoors to retain moisture.

Temperature & Humidity:
Ideal in warm, humid environments. It does not tolerate cold temperatures or frost, so keep it above 50°F (10°C). High humidity is a must, so indoor use in a terrarium or regular misting is recommended.

Fertilizer:
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring to early fall) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this plant prefers a gentle approach.

Pruning:
Minimal pruning is required. You can trim any leggy or browning growth to encourage fuller, healthier foliage.

Repotting:
Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound, using fresh, well-draining soil.
