Some plants are rare because they are difficult; others are rare because their wild homes are disappearing. This collection gathers the second kind, species whose numbers have thinned through habitat loss, over-collection, or the simple bad luck of a small geographic range. Everything offered here is grown in the nursery from seed and cuttings, never dug from the wild, so a threatened plant can persist in gardens even as wild ground gives way.

Conservation through cultivation is an old idea and a practical one. A species held across hundreds of private gardens is far harder to lose than one clinging to a single roadside or ravine. Growing a nursery-propagated rarity will not by itself restore a wild population, but the practice keeps the living plants, and the knowledge of how to grow them, from vanishing.

These are not, as a rule, beginner plants. Many are particular about soil, moisture, or light, and reward a gardener willing to learn their habits. Read each listing closely, and site every plant where the conditions genuinely suit them, rather than where a gap happens to need filling.
