Baptisia australis

$17.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 3-9

When Woodlanders began in 1980 this was about the only Baptisia known to gardeners. We subsequently introduced many other species which have become popular garden perennials. Baptisia australis is a long-lived perennial that is essentially a prairie plant found in open glades with limestone soil. Attractive compound leaves are olive green and topped in spring with spikes of bright blue flowers. Plant it in a sunny, well-drained site. Native to eastern and mid-western U.S.

PLANT DETAILS

Hardiness Zones: 3 - 9

Soil: Well-drained

Sun: Full Sun

Seasonal Behavior: Deciduous

Growth Rate:

Height at Maturity: 24 - 30 Inches

Spread at Maturity: 18 - 24 Inches

Baptisia australis produces stunning, pea-like flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. The flowers are a vibrant indigo blue, forming tall, upright racemes that can reach up to 12-24 inches in length. Each individual flower is about 1 inch in diameter and has a distinct pea-flower structure, typical of plants in the legume family.

The blooms emerge above the dense, bushy blue-green foliage, creating a striking visual contrast. The racemes of flowers are long-lasting and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making Baptisia australis a favorite in pollinator gardens.

Once the flowering period ends, the blooms give way to decorative, dark seed pods that mature throughout the summer. These seed pods turn a rich black color and add ornamental interest to the plant well into the fall. In some cases, the seed pods may persist through winter, offering visual appeal even when the plant is dormant.

Baptisia australis's flowers, along with its unique seed pods, make it an eye-catching and valuable plant for both formal and naturalized garden settings.

Sunlight: Baptisia australis thrives best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Full sun will promote more abundant blooms and help the plant maintain a strong, upright form.

Soil: Plant in well-drained soil for optimal growth. Baptisia australis is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including sandy or clay soils, but does not perform well in waterlogged conditions.

Watering: Once established, Baptisia australis is very drought-tolerant. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system. Afterward, occasional watering is sufficient, especially in prolonged dry spells.

Fertilization: This plant typically does not need fertilizing, as it is a nitrogen-fixer, enriching the soil naturally. Over-fertilizing may lead to weaker growth and excessive legginess.

Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. After flowering, deadheading is optional, but the seed pods can add ornamental interest. In late fall or early winter, cut the plant down to the ground after it dies back.

Propagation: Baptisia australis can be propagated by seed or division. However, it has a deep taproot and resents being moved once established. Seeds may take several years to germinate and reach flowering maturity.

Pests and Diseases: Baptisia australis is generally pest and disease-free. Occasionally, root rot may occur if planted in poorly drained soil.

Winter Care: Hardy in USDA zones 3-9, this plant requires no special winter care. Simply cut back dead stems after the first frost to tidy up the garden.
