The Rangpur is not truly a lime at all, but Indian gardeners have used the fruit as one for more than five hundred years. Citrus x limonia, an old natural hybrid of mandarin and citron, bears small, round, deep orange fruits that look like tangerines and taste fiercely sour, with the aromatic bite that makes a fine lime substitute for cooking, cocktails, and marmalade. In India the fruit goes by surkh nimboo, the red lime, prized for exactly that intense, tart juice.

Evergreen, fragrant in flower, and unusually cold hardy for a citrus of lime character, the Rangpur is widely grown as a dooryard fruit in California yet remains little known in the southern United States, where the plant deserves a wider audience. Woodlanders offers this old hybrid for gardeners curious about hardy, useful citrus beyond the familiar.

In the garden, grow the Rangpur in full sun and sharp, well-drained soil, in the ground in the warmer parts of zone 8 with a sheltered spot, or in a large container that can move under cover for hard freezes. The white spring blossom is sweetly fragrant, the orange fruit both ornamental and useful, so site where flower and fruit can both be enjoyed. A productive, good-looking plant, and a conversation piece for the cook who wants limes off the branch.

Design Notes

A hardy, useful lime substitute for the warm-climate kitchen garden, at home in the ground in the warmer parts of zone 8 with shelter, or in a large container to move under cover for hard freezes. Give full sun and sharp drainage, and site where the fragrant spring blossom and the ornamental orange fruit can both be enjoyed, near a patio, path, or door. Pair with other hardy citrus in an edible collection, and keep a plant near the kitchen for limes off the branch.

Light. Full sun; at least six to eight hours of direct sun, and a bright south-facing spot indoors or under glass.

Soil. Rich, sharply drained sandy loam or a quality citrus mix; avoid heavy, wet clay.

Water. Keep evenly moist but never waterlogged, letting the top inch dry between waterings; ease off in winter, and check containers often in heat.

Pruning. Prune lightly in early spring to shape and to clear dead or crossing wood; remove any rootstock suckers.

Harvest. Fruit ripens in winter and holds well on the branch; pick as needed for juice, zest, and preserves.

Hardiness. USDA zones 8 to 10; grow in the warmest, most sheltered spot in zone 8, or in a container to overwinter indoors farther north.
