This evergreen shrub is related to Camellia. This species is known only in the variegated form cultivated in Japan. The narrow leaves have a white margin. Grow in well-drained fertile soil with ample moisture. Sun or semi-shade. This is a true Cleyera, not to be confused with the related Asian shrub or small tree, Ternstroemia gymnanthera, which is usually sold in nurseries as "Cleyera".

White to yellowish white, small

Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to full shade. While it can tolerate some sun, it thrives best in shaded or partially shaded areas, particularly in hotter climates to protect it from intense afternoon sun.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in moist, well-draining, acidic to neutral soil. It prefers a pH range of 5.0 to 7.0. Incorporating organic matter such as compost can improve soil fertility and structure. It can tolerate various soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply and thoroughly to ensure the root zone is adequately hydrated. During the first growing season, water frequently to help establish a strong root system.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-9. Prefers moderate temperatures and can tolerate both humid and dry conditions. It is adaptable to a range of climates within its hardiness zones but should be protected from severe frost.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. An annual application of compost or well-rotted manure can enhance soil fertility and promote vigorous growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the shrub. Light pruning helps maintain a tidy appearance and promotes denser growth. Remove any suckers that emerge at the base of the plant to maintain its shape.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract scale insects and aphids. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Watch for signs of root rot, especially in poorly draining soils.
