Persimmon is a medium size deciduous tree that is pyramidal to oval-rounded in outline. It has dark green leaves and gray-black checkered bark. Male & female flowers (not showy) are on separate trees. Edible 1-2 inch fruit are orange when ripe and are produced on female trees. Persimmon is tolerant of a wide range of soil and moisture conditions. We offer seedling trees of undetermined sex. Native to eastern U.S.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun for optimal growth and fruit production. Ensure the tree receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate partial shade, fruit yield and quality may decrease.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.5). It can tolerate a range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils. Amending the soil with organic matter such as compost can improve fertility and structure.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply to ensure the root zone is adequately hydrated. Established trees can tolerate short periods of drought but perform best with consistent moisture.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 4-9. Prefers moderate temperatures and can tolerate a range of humidity levels. It is adaptable to various climates within its hardiness zones but should be protected from extreme cold in the northernmost regions.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and fruit production. An additional application of compost or well-rotted manure can enhance soil fertility. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of fruiting.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree. Light pruning helps maintain a tidy appearance and promotes better air circulation. Prune to maintain an open canopy, which allows sunlight to penetrate and enhances fruit production.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract aphids, scale insects, and persimmon borers. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and leaf spot. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the tree for any signs of disease or pest infestation.
