This Hypericum is a low heatherlike needle-leafed evergreen shrub with yellow flowers. This St. Johnswort is native to open sites with deep sandy soils in coastal plain of the southeastern U.S. and is one of our favorite Hypericums. It is a good garden plant for sandy open sites with good drainage. It is one of many native Hypericum species probably first offered by Woodlanders.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Hypericum reductum thrives best in full sunlight, which promotes healthy growth and abundant flowering. However, it can tolerate partial shade, particularly in hotter climates, where the intense afternoon sun may cause stress.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, sandy to loamy soils. This plant is well-suited to slightly acidic to neutral pH levels (5.5-7.0). Native to coastal regions, Hypericum reductum is adapted to sandy soils but can also grow in loam and well-drained clay soils. Incorporating organic matter like compost can improve soil structure and fertility, particularly in less fertile soils.

Watering: Requires moderate watering. Hypericum reductum is relatively drought-tolerant once established but prefers consistently moist soil during the growing season. Water the plant regularly, especially in the first year after planting, to help establish a strong root system. In drier periods, additional watering may be necessary to maintain moisture levels.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-10. Hypericum reductum is well-suited to warm, temperate climates and can tolerate a range of humidity levels. It is also tolerant of coastal conditions, including salt spray and sandy soils, making it an excellent choice for coastal gardens. It can survive mild frosts, but protection may be needed during prolonged cold spells.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Additional fertilization during the growing season is usually not necessary unless the plant shows signs of nutrient deficiency. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or well-rotted manure, can also provide essential nutrients.

Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain the plant’s shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Hypericum reductum generally requires minimal pruning, but regular trimming can help keep it tidy and encourage more vigorous growth. After the flowering period, light pruning can also stimulate new growth and potentially more blooms.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally be affected by common garden pests such as aphids or spider mites. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases like leaf spot. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular inspection and proper garden hygiene can help keep the plant healthy.
