1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 7-9

A yellow leaf form of Illicium parviflorum (which see) selected and introduced by our friend Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery. His history and and description is as follows: We brought three golden seedlings of the rare Florida endemic Illicium parviflorum back from a 2000 visit to Florida plantsman, Charles Webb. After several years of evaluation, we selected one plant for introduction as Illicium 'Florida Sunshine'. Our 7-year-old specimen has become a small shrub to 5' tall x 3' wide of anise-fragranced, chartreuse gold foliage during the spring and summer. As the weather cools in fall, the leaf color brightens to screaming yellow, then a near parchment color by midwinter. During the same time, the upper stems take on a brilliant red cast, contrasting vividly with the leaves. In sun, the winter foliage will scorch, so we recommend this be grown in light shade...a stunning beacon in the winter garden.

PLANT DETAILS

Hardiness Zones: 7 - 9

Soil: Well-drained, Moist, and Acid

Sun: Part Shade and Full Shade

Seasonal Behavior: Evergreen

Growth Rate: Moderate

Height at Maturity: 7 - Feet

Spread at Maturity: 4 - 6 Feet

Foliage: The leaves are bright golden-yellow, providing a striking, evergreen appearance year-round. The foliage is aromatic when crushed, adding an extra sensory element to the garden.

Flowers: Produces small, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers in the spring. While not particularly showy, the flowers add to the overall texture and interest of the plant.

Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to full shade. Illicium parviflorum "Florida Sunshine" thrives in partially shaded to fully shaded environments. Morning sun with afternoon shade or dappled light throughout the day is ideal. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, too much can cause the foliage to fade or burn, so it’s best to protect it from intense afternoon sun.

Soil Requirements: Prefers moist, well-draining, acidic soil. This plant grows best in rich, loamy soil with a pH range of 5.0-6.5. It is naturally adapted to moist conditions, so the soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Incorporating organic matter, such as compost or leaf mold, into the soil will help maintain moisture and improve the soil structure.

Watering: Requires regular watering to maintain consistently moist soil. "Florida Sunshine" does not tolerate drought well and should be watered regularly, especially during dry periods. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature, which is especially important in warmer climates.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 6b-9. Illicium parviflorum "Florida Sunshine" thrives in temperate to subtropical climates and is tolerant of heat and humidity. It can withstand occasional frost but may require protection in areas where temperatures drop significantly in winter.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. An additional application in mid-summer can help sustain the plant during its active growing season. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or well-rotted manure, are also beneficial for maintaining soil fertility and supporting overall plant vigor.

Pruning: Prune lightly after the growing season to maintain the plant's shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Pruning is generally minimal, but it can help encourage a fuller, bushier growth habit. If the plant becomes too large, it can be pruned more heavily in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but the plant may be prone to root rot if the soil is too wet and not well-draining. Ensuring that the soil drains properly and avoiding waterlogged conditions is key to preventing this issue. Illicium parviflorum "Florida Sunshine" is also resistant to deer browsing, making it a good choice for gardens in areas with deer populations.
