Smooth Witherod Viburnum
Viburnum nudum 'Pollinator'
Pickup currently unavailable at Aiken Nursery
'Pollinator' is a native smooth witherod grown for a specific and useful job: to pollinate the showier fruiting selections of Viburnum nudum, above all 'Winterthur' and 'Brandywine'. The species is not strictly dioecious, but the flowers set fruit far more heavily when a second, genetically distinct clone blooms nearby, and that is exactly what this plant provides.
On its own merits 'Pollinator' is a handsome, upright native shrub, carrying flat clusters of creamy-white flowers in late spring that feed a wide range of bees and other pollinators, and turning burgundy, red, and purple in fall. The clone flowers freely and works hard for the wildlife garden even though the showy fruit display belongs to the fruiting selections nearby.
Native to wet woods and swamp edges of the eastern United States, smooth witherod thrives in moist, acid, well-drained soil and adapts to clay, loam, or sand, taking full sun to part shade in stride. Plant 'Pollinator' within about fifty feet of 'Winterthur' or 'Brandywine' for the fullest berry crop those selections can carry.
Beyond the essential pollinating job, use the shrub in a mixed border, a native or habitat planting, a rain garden, or a moist woodland edge, where the creamy spring flowers and the burgundy-to-purple fall foliage earn a place in their own right. Pair with itea, clethra, winterberry, and other moisture-loving natives.
