The Viburnums: A Field Guide to the Genus That Fuels the Flight

Forty-eight kinds grow in our fields, and almost nobody plants them on purpose. A guide to the shrub whose fruit runs on fat, whose family has changed names twice, and whose berries fail for a reason nobody warns you about.

A viburnum is the shrub you have walked past a thousand times. In April there is a flat white plate of flowers at eye level in the understory; in October there is a cluster of small hard fruit going from green to pink to a blue so dark it reads as black. Between those two moments the plant does nothing to draw attention, which is precisely why the genus has spent two centuries being sold as a hedge and almost never as a subject.

That is a shame, because the viburnums are one of the great genera of the temperate world, and one of the very few where the southeastern natives and the Asian evergreens are equally worth growing, for entirely different reasons. We carry forty-eight of them. This is the guide we wish someone had handed us.

IThe family that keeps changing names

Start with the paperwork, because the paperwork is unusually entertaining here.

For most of the twentieth century Viburnum sat in Caprifoliaceae, the honeysuckle family. Molecular work in the 1990s and 2000s pulled the genus out along with Sambucus (the elderberries) and the small herb Adoxa, and the segregate family was widely published as Adoxaceae. Then the nomenclature caught up with the phylogeny: Viburnaceae Raf. had been formally conserved, a counter-proposal to conserve Adoxaceae against it failed, and under the current Code the correct name for the family is Viburnaceae.

You will still see Adoxaceae printed almost everywhere, including on the Missouri Botanical Garden's own plant pages. Both names point at the same group of plants; only one of them is correct, and the correct one is the older one. NC State Extension has quietly switched every viburnum page over. Consider this your notice.

The genus name is older than any of that. Viburnum is classical Latin, and the Romans used the word for one particular shrub, Viburnum lantana, the wayfaring tree, whose long pliant shoots were good for binding and basketry. Virgil put the word in the first Eclogue, in a line about how cypresses tower over everything around them: quantum lenta solent inter viburna cupressi. Note lenta, pliant. The suppleness is right there in the poetry. Where the word came from before the Romans had it, nobody knows; the usual guess is Etruscan, and the usual guess is a guess.

Four of the six natives in this guide are close cousins in a single clade. Once you know that, you stop seeing six shrubs and start seeing one family with a habit.

One more piece of housekeeping that turns out to matter. The eastern North American species form a well-supported group, section Lentago, which contains nudum, obovatum, prunifolium, rufidulum, lentago and cassinoides. They share small edible fruit, glabrous or nearly glabrous stems, and a tendency to run up into small tree form if left alone. Viburnum acerifolium, the mapleleaf, sits outside that group and behaves differently in every way that counts.

IIBlue fruit, and the arithmetic of a long flight

Here is the single best fact about this genus, and the reason a viburnum earns a place in a garden that already has berries.

Fruit color in Viburnum predicts fruit chemistry. Work published in 2020 across the genus found that blue-fruited species run high in lipid and low in moisture, with dry pulp and hard endocarps, while red-fruited species run the other way: wet, pulpy, and comparatively poor in fat. Lipid content across the genus spans a startling range, from about 0.2 to 22.8 percent of fresh mass, which works out to roughly 1.6 to 58 percent of dry mass.

Now put a bird on that. A study of songbirds refueling during autumn migration on Block Island measured Viburnum dentatum fruit at 41.3 percent fat by dry weight, among the very highest of the nine common fall fruits sampled, and found that consumption tracked energy density. A bird crossing open water is doing arithmetic. The blue-black viburnums are the high-octane option, ripening in exactly the weeks when that arithmetic is hardest.

So when the arrowwood and the possumhaw and the two blackhaws all turn that particular slate blue in September and October, they are not being decorative. They are provisioning.

Field Note

Do not deadhead a viburnum. NC State says it plainly: remove the spent flowers and you remove the berry crop, because the drupes form from those same flat cymes. The same goes for tidying a shrub in early summer, which cuts off next year's flower buds on the old-wood bloomers. If you want the fruit, the price is a shrub that looks slightly untidy in July.

The pollinators come earlier and quieter. The spring azure butterfly, Celastrina ladon, uses viburnum as a larval host, and the caterpillars feed on flower buds and young fruit rather than on foliage, which is a lovely and slightly alarming thought the next time you look at a cyme in April. The hummingbird clearwing moth, Hemaris thysbe, has Viburnum opulus among the caterpillar hosts on record.

IIIThe eastern natives

Six species carry the weight here. Two of them are widely available and rarely planted well; one of them does something almost no other native shrub will do.

Viburnum acerifolium

Mapleleaf viburnum

  • Acid soil

The one that changes what you can do with a difficult site. Dry shade under established hardwoods is the hardest condition in a southern garden, and the University of Maryland calls this plant one of the few locally native shrubs that can thrive in dry woods, very tolerant of both heavy shade and drought. NC State agrees, describing a moist-to-dry woodland understory plant that is drought tolerant once established.

The leaves are three-lobed and genuinely maple-like, which is the epithet doing honest work. The fall color is the best in the genus and the least predictable: pale rose to fluorescent pink, smoky burgundy, purple, sometimes gold or bronze, and often several of those on one shrub. Creamy-white flowers in flat panicles to three inches from April into June; bluish-black fruit August through October, often holding into winter. In South Carolina the species is common in the mountains and Piedmont and uncommon on the coastal plain, which puts Aiken, sitting on the fall line, right at the edge of the comfortable range. Viburnum nudum

Possumhaw, smooth witherod

  • Fragrant

The fruit display is the reason, and the fruit display is worth the fuss. Light pink to deep pink to blue to purple-black, all of those colors present on the same cluster at the same time, from August into October. The flowers are creamy white, fragrant, in flat cymes two to five inches across, in April and May. Fall color runs reddish-purple to maroon.

Where acerifolium wants dry, this species wants the opposite and will not compromise: moist to occasionally wet, tolerant of boggy ground, and listed by the South Carolina Native Plant Society as intolerant of dry soil. Acidic soil, sun to part shade. Common in the coastal, sandhill and Piedmont regions of South Carolina, which makes this the most regionally comfortable of the group for an Aiken garden. NC State names the species a potential host for the spring azure and the hummingbird clearwing.

Woodlanders carries 'Winterthur', a compact selection to about six feet with glossier leaves, introduced by Winterthur Gardens in Delaware and given the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal in 1991, and 'Pollinator', a seedling-grown native grown for one specific job, which Section VI will make sense of.

Viburnum prunifolium

The most adaptable native in the genus and the one most likely to become a small multi-stemmed tree; left alone and given room, blackhaw can reach thirty feet. White fragrant cymes four to five inches across in May and June, occasionally flushed pink. The fruit goes green to yellow to red-pink to blue-black through September and October, is genuinely edible, thin-fleshed and sweet, better after frost, and often persists into winter. Fall color is a showy red to purple.

Common throughout South Carolina, tolerant of drought, and the most pH-flexible viburnum we grow, taking soil into the basic range that most of the genus refuses. Blackhaw will grow in deep shade but will rarely bloom without sun, which is the trade to think about before siting. See the plant.

Viburnum rufidulum

Rusty blackhaw

Blackhaw's glossier, redder cousin, and the easier of the two to identify once you know where to look: rusty brown hairs on the leaf undersides, on the buds and along the stems. That rust is the epithet, rufidulum, somewhat reddish. The leaves are noticeably more lustrous.

White flowers in rounded cymes to five inches, March into May with the peak in April. Dark blue elliptic fruit in September and October, edible, sweet, close to a raisin in flavor and nearly all seed. NC State calls the fall color excellent, in reds, purples and oranges. Dry to moist loam, sun to part shade, drought tolerant and deer resistant once settled. See the plant.

Viburnum obovatum

The small-leaved evergreen of the southern coastal plain, and the earliest viburnum in the garden to flower: small dome-shaped cymes of tiny white flowers in very early spring, before most of the genus has thought about it. Fruit a quarter inch, red ripening to shiny black, in fall. Native to Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, in hammocks, thickets and swamp margins.

Leaf retention depends on the winter. NC State is explicit: evergreen in warm winters, semi-evergreen to deciduous in cold ones. At Aiken, expect semi-evergreen with real leaf drop in a hard year. Salt tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, and comfortable in heat and humidity. Sources disagree on moisture, with Missouri Botanical Garden calling for consistent even moisture and UF/IFAS calling the plant quite drought tolerant; our experience sits nearer the second, in well-drained ground.

We grow the dwarf 'Compactum', a low mounding form for the front of a bed, and 'Miss Schiller's Delight'. Fair warning on the dwarf selections: the cultivar-level size figures come from the trade rather than from any extension trial, so treat them as a good guide rather than a promise.

Viburnum dentatum

Arrowwood

  • Highest fat fruit

The toughest and most widely adaptable of the natives, hardy from zone 2, taking a wide range of soils and conditions including shade with occasional drought or flooding. Creamy-white flat-topped corymbs to four inches, the little bell-shaped flowers carrying extruded yellow-anthered stamens, in March and April. Blue-black drupes July through September. Habit upright and oval, older branches arching, and the plant suckers with age, which is either a colony or a nuisance depending on what you asked for.

Honest note on the fall color: variable, drab yellow to shades of orange and red, and the weakest of the natives here. Grow arrowwood for the wildlife, the toughness and the thicket, not for October. This is the species whose fruit was measured at 41.3 percent fat.

On the name "arrowwood," and why we are not going to tell you the usual story

Nearly every source, ours included until recently, repeats that Native Americans used the straight stems of Viburnum dentatum for arrow shafts, and that this gave the plant the common name. Look closely at how the extension services phrase it and you will notice they all hedge. NC State says the stems were used "which probably resulted the plant's common name," and separately that they were "reportedly used for arrow shafts." That "reportedly" is a signal.

We could not find a specific archaeological or first-person ethnographic record tying this species to arrow-shaft manufacture by a named people with a dated source. The entries that do exist in the Native American ethnobotany literature for Viburnum describe medicinal and ceremonial uses: an Iroquois bark and twig decoction, Ojibwa use in kinnikinnick smoking mixtures.

The one solid viburnum-and-arrows datum in the world is European and much older. Otzi, the Neolithic man who died in the Tyrolean Alps around 3300 BC, carried a quiver of fourteen arrow shafts, and the unfinished ones were made of Viburnum lantana and dogwood. Different species, different continent, five thousand years ago. The mechanical logic is sound in both cases, because straight pliant suckering shoots are exactly what you want. But the North American attribution travels without papers, and we would rather tell you that than repeat it.

IVThe evergreens, and what survives an Aiken winter

The Asian and Mediterranean evergreens are a different proposition entirely: bulk, gloss, winter presence, and in two cases real fragrance. They are also where the hardiness question gets genuinely uncertain in zone 8a, and where we would rather give you the disagreement than a confident number.

Viburnum tinus, the laurustinus, flowers when almost nothing else does. From late autumn the flat heads are already formed and waiting, deep pink buds that open to white through January and into early April, followed by metallic dark blue drupes that persist toward the following spring. Native to Mediterranean Europe and North Africa. The Romans called the shrub tinus two thousand years ago, and Pliny the Elder set the name down; laurus plus tinus gives us laurustinus, for the laurel-like foliage. The epithet is not a description of anything. It is simply the plant's oldest name, carried forward.

Hardiness is the live question. NC State rates the species 8a and up, with no 7b, and Clemson notes leaf damage below 10 degrees. Treat Aiken as workable but site the plant with some shelter and good drainage. 'Spring Bouquet' is the compact form, four to six feet, and the one we have most of.

Viburnum awabuki 'Chindo' carries a real collecting story: J. C. Raulston brought the plant back from Jindo, South Korea, in 1985. Bold, glossy, fast, with pendulous red-to-black fruit in autumn. Two disagreements you should know about. The name is unsettled, with NC State and Kew accepting V. awabuki as a species while UF/IFAS still publishes under V. odoratissimum var. awabuki. And the hardiness rating splits badly: NC State gives 7b to 9b for this cultivar, UF/IFAS gives 9a and up for the species. That gap is the difference between a safe planting and a bad winter. We grow the plant here and the shrub performs, but expect some foliage burn in a hard year and site accordingly. See the plant.

Viburnum odoratissimum wears the name plainly: the Latin superlative, most fragrant. Small funnel-shaped white flowers in conical terminal panicles in spring, and the scent is the whole point, since NC State calls the fruit non-showy and of little wildlife value and there is no fall color to speak of. One practical caution worth repeating: the bark is thin and easily damaged by mechanical impact, so keep the string trimmer away.

Viburnum japonicum and Viburnum cinnamomifolium are the rarities, and we will be straight with you: neither has meaningful US extension coverage, so the hardiness and heat-performance figures circulating for both are thin. Japonicum is a slow, dense, rounded evergreen with very fragrant white flowers in early summer and persistent red berries in autumn, needing shelter from cold drying wind, and historically mislabeled as V. odoratissimum in the trade. Cinnamon-leaf viburnum is one of the great broadleaf evergreens of the genus, a substantial dignified shrub from the mountain forests of western China, with bright blue fruit and pink-budded white flowers. Sources put hardiness anywhere from zone 5 to zone 8, which is not a range so much as an admission that nobody has tested the plant properly. We grow both, and we would call them a considered gamble rather than a safe bet.

VThe doublefile, and the architecture of a tier

Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum is the one everybody recognizes and nobody can explain. The shrub reads as a stack of horizontal shelves, a pagoda in a border, and the usual explanation credits the flowers. That is backwards.

The architecture comes first. The branching is opposite, two branches per node, and those pairs radiate in flat horizontal planes that overlap as the shrub builds. The flower clusters then line up in two rows along the top of each tier, one on each side of a node, which is what "doublefile" means. The flowers do not create the layering. They reveal it, by picking it out in white.

The cymes are lacecap in structure, a ring of large sterile florets around a center of tiny fertile ones, two to four inches across, white fading to pink, in April and then sporadically through summer. Red fruit ripening to black in fall, favored by birds. Fall color reddish-purple to burgundy. Hardy zones 5a to 8b, so no argument at Aiken.

Field Note

The doublefile's weakness in the Southeast is summer, not winter. Oregon State flags marginal leaf necrosis in hot dry positions and notes the plant does better where the soil surface is protected from the sun, with compost or a groundcover. Site the shrub where the roots stay cool and the tiers get morning light, and mulch generously. Two further notes: V. plicatum is listed by the Maryland Invasive Species Council among species escaping into Mid-Atlantic natural areas, though the species appears on no South Carolina list, and the buds are naked, without scales, which is a satisfying winter identification detail.

VIThree honest cautions

One: your berries are failing because your shrubs are one plant

This is the most common disappointment in the genus and almost nobody is told about it in advance.

Viburnums set fruit poorly without pollen from a genetically distinct individual. NC State says of arrowwood that more than one genetic strain is needed to generate fruit; of V. nudum that berry production is best with more than one shrub; of V. tinus that fruit set requires another viburnum type nearby. Missouri Botanical Garden tells you to plant 'Winterthur' in groups rather than as a single specimen, and specifically to pair 'Winterthur' with 'Brandywine'.

Here is the mechanism, and it is the part worth understanding. A named cultivar is a clone. A hedge of twenty 'Winterthur' is genetically one individual repeated twenty times. There is no cross-pollen anywhere in that hedge, so the spectacular multicolored fruit display you bought the plant for never appears, and you spend three years assuming you did something wrong. The fix is to plant a second, genetically different clone, or a seedling-grown plant, close enough to matter.

Which is exactly the job 'Pollinator' exists to do. Not a showier plant. A different plant.

A hedge of twenty clones is one shrub with twenty stems, and a lone shrub has no cross-pollen to give.

Two: the viburnum leaf beetle, which is not our problem yet

Pyrrhalta viburni is the pest that has reshaped viburnum planting across the Northeast, capable of destroying a susceptible shrub in two or three years. The honest southeastern position, as of this writing, is that the beetle has not reached us.

Occurrence records place the confirmed front at Virginia and West Virginia, with a separate western population in Washington state and British Columbia. There are no confirmed records in South Carolina, Georgia, or anywhere in the Deep South. A handful of North Carolina sightings exist but none have been verified. Clemson's own May 2026 factsheet on viburnum pests in South Carolina does not mention the beetle at all, and opens by noting that most viburnums are relatively pest-free landscape shrubs in this state.

Cornell's susceptibility rankings, and what to do if the beetle arrives

Cornell's list, compiled by Dr. Paul Weston and explicitly labeled preliminary, sorts the genus by how hard the beetle hits.

Highly susceptible: V. dentatum, V. nudum, V. opulus, V. propinquum, V. rafinesquianum. Susceptible: V. acerifolium, V. lantana, V. rufidulum. Moderately susceptible: V. prunifolium, V. dilatatum, V. macrocephalum, V. tinus. Most resistant: V. carlesii, V. plicatum and var. tomentosum, V. rhytidophyllum, V. setigerum, V. sieboldii.

Note what is missing. V. obovatum and V. odoratissimum have never been rated, because neither is grown much in the northern range where the beetle lives. Absence from the list is not evidence of resistance, and we are not going to let you read it that way.

The control window is the dormant season. The female chews a pinhead-sized pit into a twig, usually current-season growth, lays about eight eggs in it and caps the cavity with chewed bark, working up the twig in a distinctive row of caps on the underside. Pruning out egg-infested twigs between early October and mid-April is, in Cornell's words, probably the single most effective measure available, and the caps are easiest to see on a leafless shrub. The second window is late April to early May, spraying newly hatched larvae on the leaf undersides, the younger the better. Spraying adults is far less effective. One generation a year.

Three: the fruit, and which one you can actually eat

The American blackhaws are the ones eaten raw. V. prunifolium fruit is sweet and thin-fleshed, compared to dates or prunes, best after frost, and variable plant to plant. V. rufidulum is sweeter still and nearly all seed. V. nudum is acidic but edible and makes a decent jam.

Viburnum opulus is the exception and the reason for the caution. The raw fruit is bitter, contains saponins, and can cause stomach upset in quantity; the tradition everywhere the plant grows is to cook the fruit first. Some viburnum fruits are edible and some are mildly poisonous, and color is not a reliable guide to which.

Blackhaw bark, the Eclectic physicians, and what the evidence actually shows

The bark of Viburnum prunifolium was official in the United States Pharmacopoeia from 1882 to 1926 and later in the National Formulary, popularized by the nineteenth-century Eclectic physicians and used as a uterine antispasmodic, for cramping and threatened miscarriage, and more generally as an antispasmodic, mild sedative and diuretic. European tradition ran a close parallel with V. opulus bark, cramp bark, in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia for more than two centuries, with documented Meskwaki use for menstrual cramps, arthritis and back pain.

The constituents usually named are scopoletin and aesculetin in blackhaw, scopoletin and viopudial in cramp bark, cited for smooth-muscle antispasmodic activity. The important caveat comes from the review literature itself: that evidence is in vitro and isolated-tissue work, and there are no clinical trials supporting these uses. This is traditional use with preclinical evidence, recorded here as history. Nothing in this paragraph is medical advice, and no dosage is given or implied.

VIIPlanting in the cooling

Fall is the right time, and in South Carolina this is not a preference but the extension position. Clemson states that in South Carolina, fall is the best season to plant shrubs for optimal root growth and successful establishment. The reasoning is worth holding onto: the top of the plant goes dormant while the soil stays warm enough that roots keep growing, so the carbohydrates banked during the last growing season go into root extension instead of competing with shoot growth. By the time spring transpiration demand arrives, the root system is already in place. UGA puts the same argument more briefly, noting that a fall-planted tree will outperform a spring-planted one because the roots establish before summer heat draws moisture and causes stress.

Mid-September is the start of the window. If you have been reading down this guide with a shovel in your hand, the near-term shortlist by site is straightforward.

Dry shade under oaks: V. acerifolium, and very little else. Low ground, a wet corner, a pond edge: V. nudum and a second genetic clone. A small tree at the back of a border: V. prunifolium or V. rufidulum, the second for the better October. Evergreen bulk and winter flower: V. tinus 'Spring Bouquet', sheltered. Evergreen screen with speed: V. awabuki 'Chindo', accepting some winter burn.

Prune, if you must, after flowering, and remember what Section II said about the cost of tidiness. Most viburnums bloom on old growth, so a spring haircut buys you a neat shrub and no berries at all.

If you take one thing from this guide, take the pollination note: buy two, and make them different.
