There are few sights more stirring than a wisteria in bloom, and 'Amethyst Falls' offers all the romance without the unruly habits of the Asian cousins. This refined selection of the native American wisteria, Wisteria frutescens, pours out cascades of fragrant, lavender-violet blossoms in late spring, with smaller flushes through summer, a soft echo of springtime returning again and again.

Compact in growth yet generous in flower, 'Amethyst Falls' climbs with grace, not aggression. The twining stems suit an arbor, a fence, a pergola, or even a large container. Unlike the rampant Chinese and Japanese kinds, this Southern heirloom is well-mannered, rarely invasive, and perfectly at home in the gardens of those who prefer beauty without battle.

Borne in dangling racemes, the blooms draw bees and butterflies, carrying both fragrance and nectar. Once rooted, the plant is sturdy and adaptable, thriving in full sun and a wide range of soils. Native, non-invasive, and easy to manage, 'Amethyst Falls' brings cottage-garden charm to a post or a wall and repeats the show through the season with a light hand and a little care.

Plant 'Amethyst Falls', and you plant a piece of poetry, graceful blossoms that soften the hard lines of wood and stone, recalling the old gardens of the South while promising a gentler future for the vine's wild beauty.

Design Notes

A compact, well-mannered native climber for an arbor, a fence, a pergola, or a large container, where the fragrant lavender-violet racemes can hang and be watched for bees. Give 'Amethyst Falls' a sturdy support and full sun for the heaviest bloom, and a light pruning after the first flush to spur repeat flowering. Non-invasive and easy, a graceful alternative to the aggressive Asian wisterias.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Lavender-violet, fragrant, late spring with summer rebloom

Flower. Pendulous clusters of pea-like blossoms four to six inches long, shorter than the long racemes of the Asian wisterias but borne in greater abundance. The flowers open from base to tip in deep amethyst-violet to lavender-blue, each with a small yellow-white blotch at the throat, and carry a light, sweet fragrance. Bloom comes in late spring, often a month earlier than the Asian kinds, and repeats in flushes into summer with light pruning.

Foliage. Pinnate leaves of nine to fifteen small, lance-shaped leaflets, fresh bright green in spring and deepening to medium green through summer, shifting to yellow-green before dropping. The growth is lush but restrained, keeping a well-kept look even in high summer.

Care

Light. Full sun for the heaviest bloom; tolerates light shade with fewer flowers.

Soil. Well-drained soil of average fertility; adaptable to a wide range.

Water. Water through establishment; steady moisture supports repeat bloom.

Pruning. Prune lightly after the spring flush and again in late winter to shape and spur reblooming, since flowers come on new wood.

Hardiness. USDA zones 5 to 9; a hardy, non-invasive native cultivar.
