The Weight of a Wisteria
Every April the South goes lavender along the roadsides, and every April somebody decides to plant that. A guide to siting the vine properly, choosing the one that will not eat the porch, and understanding why the native flowers later and forgives more.
There is a particular week in April when Interstate 20 runs through a haze of lavender, when the pine edges south of Aiken go the color of a bruise, and when the phone starts ringing. People want that. They have wanted that every spring since the 1830s, which is exactly the problem.
What they are looking at is almost never a species. What they are looking at is not native. And what they are looking at is doing something to those pines that is genuinely difficult to undo.
This is not an argument against growing a wisteria. We sell six. This is an argument about which one, and about the single most neglected decision in the whole business, which is what you are going to ask the vine to stand on.
IThe purple along the highway is not what you think
Chinese wisteria, Wisteria sinensis, and Japanese wisteria, Wisteria floribunda, both arrived in American gardens in the early nineteenth century and both got away. All three Asian taxa now sit in Category I on the South Carolina Invasive Pest Council's July 2024 list, at the highest distribution rating, meaning all regions of the state. Category I covers plants known to displace native species and alter the composition, structure or ecological function of plant communities, and includes species considered difficult to manage by professionals.
Note that "all three." The council lists a third entry alongside the two species: hybrid Asian wisteria, Wisteria × formosa. There is a reason for that, and the reason is one of the more useful pieces of research nobody in the trade talks about.
In 2007 a team led by Jennifer Trusty at Auburn sampled naturalized wisteria across the Southeast and genotyped it. In the first study, twenty-four of twenty-five naturalized collections, ninety-six percent, turned out to be hybrids between W. floribunda and W. sinensis. A larger companion study sampling seventy-two collections around Charleston and Tallahassee found fifty-nine of them, eighty-two percent, were hybrids. The authors' conclusion is worth quoting exactly, because it dismantles a habit almost every field guide has:
Morphological characters that clearly differentiate the introduced species cannot be used to reliably identify naturalised individuals.
Which is to say: the thing on the roadside is not Chinese wisteria and is not Japanese wisteria. What grows there is a genetically diverse hybrid swarm with a hundred and ninety years of head start, and you cannot tell what you are looking at by counting leaflets or watching which way the stem twines. Weakley's flora, working the same problem from the herbarium side, says the great majority of southeastern material could probably be called W. × formosa, and that the key may work poorly or not at all.
A third Trusty paper turned the question back on the nursery trade, sampling twenty-five Asian wisteria cultivars in commerce. Fifteen of them, sixty percent, were hybrids, and every cultivar sold as W. sinensis in that sample turned out to be a hybrid with W. floribunda. Four haplotypes were shared between cultivated stock and naturalized populations. The garden and the roadside are the same gene pool.
What the Asian wisterias do to trees is well documented and unpleasant. Alabama Extension photographs a wisteria vine girdling a pine and describes girdling of mature hardwoods. The Forest Service database records canopy gap formation when wisteria topples a large tree. The South Carolina Native Plant Society, closer to home, says the vine can choke out forest edges and cause trees to lose limbs and sometimes break. Clemson's Bob Polomski gave us the best sentence anyone has written on the subject: the Asian species have "become botanical pythons, strangling trees and occasionally felling them with their sheer weight."
Two things worth knowing before you assume this is all seed dispersal. It is not. Vegetative growth is the primary means of spread: slender stolons run horizontally across the ground and root at the nodes, particularly where vines are covered by leaf litter, and any fragment of root left behind after mechanical damage will sprout. Seed is produced when conditions favor it, and in riparian ground the heavy pods travel downstream, which matters in a landscape organized around the Savannah River. Aiken sits warm enough that winter kill of flower buds, the brake that limits seed set further north, is weaker here than in the mid-Atlantic.
Neither Asian species is legally regulated in South Carolina, incidentally. State noxious weed regulation lists nine plants, all aquatic. The state has shown it will ban nursery sales when it decides to, banning Pyrus calleryana and three Elaeagnus species from sale as of October 2024, and chose not to include wisteria. The decision is left to the person holding the shovel.
IIThe vine Linnaeus filed as a soybean
The American plant has the older paperwork and a better story.
Linnaeus described the species in 1753 as Glycine frutescens, from a type locality given simply as "Carolina." Glycine is the soybean genus. For seventy years the native wisteria of the southeastern swamp forests sat in the books as a kind of soybean, which is not as absurd as it sounds once you have looked at the pinnate leaves and the pea flowers, but is still a fine thing to know. Poiret moved the plant to Wisteria in 1823.
The genus itself was published by Thomas Nuttall in July 1818, and Nuttall's own footnote says exactly who he had in mind:
In memory of Caspar Wistar, M.D. late professor of Anatomy in the University of Pennsylvania, and for many years president of the American Philosophical Society: a philanthrophist of simple manners, and modest pretensions, but an active promoter of science.
Which raises the obvious question, and here the record is clearer than the folklore. Nuttall printed Wisteria, with an e, on the page in 1818. The spelling is his, not a printer's slip and not a later alteration. The genus was briefly conserved the other way: Harms proposed Wistaria in 1904, the Vienna Congress approved it in 1905 and 1906, and the Codes carried Wistaria until the Cambridge Code of 1935 corrected the spelling back to Nuttall's. The current Code settles the matter with an explicit example, stating that Wisteria is not to be altered to Wistaria, although the genus was named in honour of Caspar Wistar.
So the misspelling, if that is what it is, is nearly two centuries old, was formally overturned once, and won anyway.
IIINew wood, and why it changes everything
This is the practical heart of the piece, and almost nobody leads with it.
American wisteria flowers on new wood, on the current season's growth, after the leaves have come out. The Asian species flower on old wood, from buds set the previous late summer, before or as the leaves emerge. That one difference cascades into everything else.

UGA's Gary Wade puts numbers on the timing: 'Amethyst Falls' flowers on new growth about two weeks later than the Asian types, late April to early May in Athens, and late-winter frosts seldom affect flowering. Clemson's Bob Polomski gives the interval as about three weeks. Take the mechanism as certain and the interval as roughly two to three weeks.
Do not read that as frost-proof. Both NC State and Missouri Botanical Garden list winter flower-bud death among the causes of non-flowering in the native too. "Seldom affected" is the defensible claim, and it is claim enough.
The pruning consequence is the one that saves people real grief. The general rule, as the Virginia Tech Master Gardener handbook states it: plants that flower on new wood are pruned before new growth begins; plants that flower on the previous season's growth are pruned immediately after flowering. Cut an Asian wisteria at the wrong moment and the RHS notes that flowering usually resumes in two or three years' time. Cut an American wisteria back hard in February and you lose nothing at all.
Be careful reading extension pages that say "wisteria" and mean the Asian species. Several state services give old-wood pruning advice under a bare genus heading, including in answers to gardeners asking specifically about an American plant. Purdue is the one page we found that states both halves correctly side by side. Our own product page for 'Dam B' carried that Asian instruction until the week this guide was written, which is the sort of thing you only notice when you sit down to write one. It has been corrected.
The RHS two-prunes-a-year regime, for an Asian wisteria you already have
If there is an established Chinese or Japanese wisteria on the property, the RHS regime is the one to follow. Prune twice a year, in July or August and again in January or February. In summer, after flowering, cut the whippy green shoots of the current year's growth back to five or six leaves; this controls size and encourages the plant to form flower buds rather than green growth. In winter, cut those same shoots back to two or three buds, to within an inch or two of older wood. The point of the whole exercise is to restrict vegetative growth and build short flowering spurs.
One caution: the RHS page contradicts itself, with a slideshow caption saying five or six buds in winter while the body text says two or three. Follow the body text. And the popular mnemonic "two in two, seven in seven" is not RHS wording; the RHS says five or six leaves in July.
Why your wisteria will not bloom, in order of likelihood
Age. A seedling wisteria can take up to about twenty years to flower. This is the single commonest reason, and it is why both the RHS and NC State tell you to buy a plant that is grafted or grown from cuttings, and ideally to buy in flower. The RHS is specific: look for the graft union as a bulge near the base of the stem. Vegetatively propagated plants typically flower within roughly two to four years of planting, because asexual propagation carries the adult phase forward instead of starting the juvenile clock again.
Nitrogen. Six separate extension services agree that excess nitrogen drives leaf and stem growth at the expense of flowers. Arkansas puts it well: too much nitrogen gives you all growth and no blooms, and established plants often do fine with no supplemental fertilizer at all. Note that the popular claim that a wisteria fixes nitrogen and therefore never needs feeding is thinner than the confidence suggests; root nodules are documented on the Asian species, but no study has documented nodulation on W. frutescens, and no measured fixation rate exists for any wisteria.
Shade. Full sun, or expect very little.
Pruning at the wrong moment, covered above.
Root pruning to force bloom is a real extension technique, recommended by at least five services, most of them hedging. New Mexico State gives the only clear method: trench or cut roots two to three feet from the trunk, not close in. Michigan State's caution is the honest one, that root pruning can kick a wisteria into action but sometimes the best thing is to wait. The superphosphate advice that usually travels with it is weaker than its confidence suggests: recommended flatly by Kansas State and New Mexico State, reported by Purdue as something growers who have succeeded often recommend, conditioned on actual deficiency by Utah State, replaced with potassium by the RHS, and contradicted in principle by Washington State's work on phosphate myths in landscape soil. Get a soil test before you reach for a bag.
IVWhat a wisteria actually needs to stand on
We went looking for a number. There is not one.
No extension service, no agricultural university, no engineering source publishes a weight figure, a load table or a span calculation for a mature wisteria. What exists is a set of warnings, and the warnings are consistent enough to act on. NC State: some wisterias become quite heavy, straining the pergola or structure supporting them, and the vine will grow into small spaces and pry them apart. Clemson: the weight may collapse weak support structures. Mississippi State, on the Asian species, that they are usually only limited by the support on which they grow.
The single extension source that gives any dimension at all is Utah State, in a peer-reviewed fact sheet, and the sentence is worth having: wisteria need sturdy support such as an arbor, pergola or strong fence; they destroy lattice work and other types of prefabricated trellises; opt for structures using six by six or larger wood posts, or steel beam construction.
That is the whole of the published record. Everything else circulating about post depth and concrete volume comes from consumer blogs. If we tell you to sink a six by six three feet into concrete, understand that we are telling you what we do in Aiken, not citing a study.
There is one genuine conflict in the literature and it is worth knowing which side of it you are on. Utah State says wisteria destroy lattice and prefabricated trellises. The NC State Extension Gardener Handbook says twining vines grow well on lattice, chain-link fencing, or any structure they can weave through, and names American wisteria and Carolina jessamine as its examples. Both are right about different plants. A mature Asian wisteria will take apart lattice. Wisteria frutescens, at a fraction of the mass, is genuinely a fence-and-lattice plant, and NC State lists fences among the recommended supports for the native species.
What not to grow a wisteria on
A tree. Clemson is categorical: do not allow any vine to climb to the top of a tree. The University of Arkansas extends the warning explicitly to the American species, and gives two reasons, both good. Over time the vines become woody and could girdle the tree; and for best blooming, the vine needs full sun, which the canopy will not give.
Anything near a small tree or a shrub you like. The NC State handbook advises against planting twining vines near small trees and shrubs, because the vines become difficult to control. Kansas State is blunter: they will choke them out.
Gutters, shutters, awnings, windows. This is the specific documented damage. The vine wedges into small spaces and pries them apart. Summer pruning is what keeps a wisteria out of guttering and windows.
Two things we are not going to tell you, because we went looking and the sources are not there. No extension source documents wisteria roots damaging foundations, lifting hardscape or invading septic lines; treat that one as folk wisdom. And the warnings you will find about vines growing under vinyl siding are written about clinging vines with adventitious roots, trumpet creeper and climbing hydrangea and the like. Wisteria is a twiner. Do not transfer the quote.
Clemson's transferable idea is the best design move in the literature: build the trellis a few feet away from the structure, and let the vine own the trellis rather than the house. If you want the vine near the porch without the vine on the porch, that is how.
VThe four natives worth planting
Wisteria frutescens is native to twenty-eight states, including South Carolina, growing in moist thickets, swampy woods, pond peripheries, stream borders and along river banks. In this state the species is common on the coastal plain and rare inland. There are herbarium vouchers from Aiken County itself, at Kitchings Mill and at the Silver Bluff Audubon Center on the Savannah River, and more from Allendale and Barnwell on the Savannah River Site. Aiken sits at the sparse inner edge of the range rather than the abundance core, which makes the plant genuinely local here without being common.
Wisteria frutescens
American wisteria, Atlantic wisteria

The straight species, and the baseline. Racemes four to six inches, dense and comparatively upright, in April and May, with limited additional bloom sometimes appearing through summer. Typically twenty to thirty feet on a support, considerably less than the Asian species, which run to seventy or eighty feet unmanaged in trees. Extension services describe the native as not as aggressive a spreader, less aggressive than Japanese or Chinese wisteria, more delicate and less aggressive in growth. Nobody has published a comparative growth rate in feet per year, so we will leave it qualitative. See the plant.
Wisteria 'Amethyst Falls'

Ours in the sense that the plant came out of Oconee County: introduced by Head-Lee Nursery of Seneca, South Carolina, and in the trade by 1995. Clemson describes the origin as a stem mutation found by Bill and Bob Head; the earliest dated record we could find, in the 1995 Southern Nurserymen's Association proceedings, describes a form found in Oconee County with deeper amethyst flowers that tends to rebloom at times through the summer. The two accounts agree on the place and disagree on the mechanism, and we have not been able to settle which is right.
Smaller leaves and smaller flowers than the Asian relatives, enough that some call this a dwarf wisteria, climbing eighteen to twenty feet with a ten to fifteen foot spread. Racemes about the same length as the straight species. What is genuinely different is the rebloom, which Clemson says comes with greater vigor than in the species, in mid and late summer. Wisteria frutescens 'Nivea'
The white American wisteria

A white form of the well-behaved native, twining and deciduous, with compound leaves and short dense clusters. Older than most people assume: Lescuyer's name dates to 1854, and Bean records the plant in European cultivation by that year.
A note on the name, since we have been carrying it one way and the botanists carry it another. Wisteria frutescens var. nivea has no standing in IPNI or Kew's Plants of the World Online; World Flora Online carries the name as a nineteenth-century horticultural synonym. The correct way to write the plant is as a cultivar, Wisteria frutescens 'Nivea'. We have updated our own listing to match; the web address still uses the old spelling, so an old link will not break. Wisteria macrostachya 'Clara Mack'

The white form of the latest-blooming native, and one of ours. 'Clara Mack' was found and shared by the late Clara Mack, a country plant lady of Lexington County, South Carolina, and introduced by this nursery. The J. C. Raulston Arboretum holds an accession, planted in November 2000, which is the only third-party paper trail we know of.
Kentucky wisteria carries much longer racemes than frutescens, eight to twelve inches and sometimes more, with up to ninety flowers, and blooms latest of all, in June. Like the rest of the American group, the plant blooms on new wood, so a hard prune never costs the coming flowers.
One taxonomic honesty note: Kew now treats this plant as Wisteria frutescens subsp. macrostachya, following Compton and Schrire in 2019, and ITIS and USDA sink the name entirely into W. frutescens. We keep W. macrostachya as the name gardeners search for. See the plant.
'Dam B', and a lake in the Pineywoods
The fifth native we carry has the best name in the catalog and an origin story that checks out from five directions.
Lynn Lowrey, the Houston horticulturist widely called the founder of the native plant movement in Texas, found a fine native wisteria near the dam of a lake in southeast Texas that carried the wonderfully unromantic designation "Dam B." The naming happened later, in the Stephen F. Austin Mast Arboretum in late May 1998, when David Creech and Greg Grant were standing in front of the plant trying to think of a cultivar name. A bumblebee dived at Grant's head. He swatted and muttered "damn bee." Creech said that will do, and since the collection site was Dam B anyway, the spelling has never been fully settled. The clone still circulates as 'Lowrey' and occasionally as 'Damn Bee'.
The place is real. Dam B was the original designation of what is now Town Bluff Dam, impounding B. A. Steinhagen Lake on the Neches River in the deep East Texas Pineywoods, authorized in 1945 and renamed in 1967. There is still a community called Dam B. Creech's memorial tribute to Lowrey, written six weeks after his death in 1997, already refers to the plant by that name, and records Lowrey's own view: that the Dam B wisterias, white and blue forms both, were worthy of greater use and certainly easier to manage than those rude Japanese and Chinese cousins. VITwo honest cautions
The seeds, precisely
Wisteria seeds and pods can make people sick if eaten, and the American species is not exempt. The published medical literature on this amounts to three case reports worldwide. A 1993 report describes an adult who ate ten seeds and had headache, gastroenteritis, dizziness, confusion and a fainting episode, still tired and dizzy five to seven days later. A 2017 Korean series covering seven kindergarten children, six of whom ate half a seed and one a whole one, records vomiting within four hours in all of them, abdominal pain by five hours, hospital stays averaging just over three days, and complete recovery in every case.
So: symptoms start within a few hours, the illness is vomiting and stomach pain sometimes with dizziness and fatigue, and it resolves in a day or two, occasionally with intravenous fluids. The real hazard is dehydration, not organ damage. There are no documented human deaths from wisteria anywhere in the literature, and the fatality claim circulating online traces to an uncited commercial pet-care website. The plant is toxic to dogs, cats and horses on the ASPCA's list, with vomiting, diarrhea and depression the signs.
Two corrections while we are here. The compound usually named as the poison, "wisterin," has never actually been characterized; the World Health Organization's own monograph calls it an uncharacterized glycoside, and it has no entry in PubChem and no papers in PubMed. And the widely repeated line that one or two seeds will cause severe illness traces to a single 1978 French regional medical note that cannot be retrieved. The 2017 half-a-seed finding in small children is the better basis for caution.
The practical version: keep the pods away from small children and dogs. The plant is entirely safe to grow, prune and stand under. Nothing here is medical advice.
The one that is genuinely hard to undo
If there is an established Asian wisteria on your property and you decide to take the vine out, understand what you are taking on. Fragments of the root system left in the ground will sprout. Cut vines left coiled around a trunk may still girdle the tree as the trunk expands. Patches expand to real size; one herbicide trial in Alabama was conducted in a Chinese wisteria patch covering two to three acres.
We are not going to give you a control protocol here, because that is a Clemson question and the answer depends on your site. But if the vine is young, now is a far better time than five years from now.
VIIPlanting in the cooling
Fall is the window in South Carolina, and Clemson states the position plainly: in this state, fall is the best season to plant for root growth and successful establishment, because the top of the plant goes dormant while the soil stays warm enough for roots to keep working. Mid-September is the start.
Full sun. Well-drained ground, though the native tolerates moisture better than most vines, having evolved along stream borders and swamp margins. Build the support before the plant goes in, not after; a wisteria will find the thing you meant to replace next year and make the decision for you. And buy a plant that was grown from a cutting or a graft, ideally in flower, unless you are content to wait out a juvenile period that can run to two decades.
Then prune in late winter, hard if you like, and let the vine spend April making the wood that will carry May.

From the nursery. We have grown American wisteria in Aiken long enough to have introduced one, and long enough to know that the vine people actually want is usually the vine they should not have. The natives flower two weeks later, forgive a hard prune, and will not pull down the pergola. That seems a fair trade for two weeks.
