Some years ago the late Lynn Lowery, a pioneer of Texas native plants, found a fine selection of native wisteria near the dam of an East Texas reservoir. The dam was known as Dam-B, and Lynn gave that name to the plant, though some contend the true name was Damn Bee. Woodlanders thanks Dr. David Creech of Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, for the start of this and several other fine plants.

The vine has been carried as Wisteria frutescens, though the foliage and the longer blue flower clusters look closer to the other native species, the Kentucky wisteria, Wisteria macrostachya. The two natives are close kin and easily confused, and 'Dam-B' sits somewhere in that gentle overlap.

Whichever name proves right, the plant carries the great virtue of the American wisterias: real restraint. The twining stems climb a post or trellis without the fifty-year land grab of the Chinese and Japanese kinds, and the fragrant, drooping racemes bring the whole romance of wisteria on a plant that stays in bounds.

Give 'Dam-B' a sturdy support in full sun to light shade and moist, well-drained soil, and prune after flowering to shape. A collector's native selection with a genuine Texas story attached, and a well-mannered climber for an arbor, a fence, or a strong post.

Design Notes

A collector's native wisteria for a sturdy post, an arbor, or a trellis in full sun to light shade, prized for a genuine Texas provenance and the restraint of the American natives. Give 'Dam-B' a strong support and moist, well-drained soil, and prune after flowering to shape. Far less aggressive than the Chinese and Japanese wisterias, and a safe choice near trees and structures.
