About the Oaks Collection
Oaks are the great, long-lived trees of the genus Quercus, the defining hardwoods of much of North America. The genus is vast and varied: towering deciduous shade trees and broad live oaks that hold their leaves through winter, fast growers and slow, uplanders and bottomland dwellers, all sharing the acorn and a reputation for strength and permanence. Given room, an oak becomes the tree a whole landscape is built around, and the one a family measures its years by.
In the landscape an oak is the ultimate specimen and shade tree. A single one cools a house and a lawn, frames a view, and gives a garden a sense of age no younger planting can. The evergreen live oaks make sweeping, architectural forms; the deciduous kinds bring autumn color and a fine winter silhouette. These are trees to site with real care, for a lifetime and beyond.
We grow oaks because they are, quite simply, the most valuable plants most people can put in the ground. Oaks support more kinds of wildlife than any other tree in North America, hosting hundreds of species of caterpillars that feed nesting birds, and their acorns carry deer, turkey, and countless smaller creatures through winter. To plant an oak is to plant the foundation of a food web.
