A yellow-flowered butterfly bush, Buddleia x weyeriana 'Honeycomb' is a vigorous hybrid of Buddleia globosa and Buddleia davidii that the late Dr. Michael Dirr judged better than the older 'Sungold'. The plant came to Dirr from Crathes Castle Garden in Scotland, bought as the variety 'E.H. Wilson' but proving to be a very different and superior yellow butterfly bush, named 'Honeycomb' and a standout in Georgia trials, flowering as late as Thanksgiving.

The honey-scented, creamy-yellow to golden-orange flowers gather in rounded clusters, like little globes, from midsummer well into late fall, on both new and old wood, a long and generous nectar source for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. As a hybrid, 'Honeycomb' sets little or no viable seed, a well-behaved, non-self-sowing alternative to the common butterfly bush.

Plant 'Honeycomb' in a sunny border, a cottage garden, or a pollinator planting, where the unusual gold flowers and long season earn a place; the blooms are good for cutting too. Six to eight feet, fast and tough, deer-resistant, and drought-tolerant once established. Cut back in late winter to keep the shrub bushy.

Design Notes

An unusual gold-flowered butterfly bush for a sunny border, a cottage garden, or a pollinator planting, where the honey-scented globes and exceptionally long season (midsummer to late fall) feed butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, and the blooms cut well for the vase. Near-sterile and well-behaved, a non-self-sowing alternative to the common butterfly bush. Six to eight feet, fast, drought-tolerant, and deer-resistant.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Fragrant creamy-yellow to golden-orange flowers in rounded clusters, midsummer to late fall

Flowers. Rounded clusters of creamy-yellow to golden-orange flowers, like little globes, highly fragrant with a honey scent that draws butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Unlike many butterfly bushes, 'Honeycomb' flowers prolifically from midsummer through late fall, on both new and old wood, a long nectar source for wildlife. Fruit. As a hybrid, 'Honeycomb' sets little or no viable seed, a more controlled, non-self-sowing choice than the common butterfly bush; any seed capsules are small and few. Foliage. Lance-shaped, soft, slightly fuzzy leaves in muted to deep green on a gracefully arching frame, semi-deciduous and holding late in mild climates.

Care

Light. Full sun; at least six hours of direct sun.

Soil. Average, well-drained soil; adaptable to chalk, clay, loam, or sand, but intolerant of wet feet.

Water. Water to establish; drought tolerant once settled.

Pruning. Prune in late winter or early spring; the shrub flowers on both new and old wood, so timely pruning does not sacrifice bloom. A harder cut every few years prevents legginess.

Hardiness. USDA zones 5 to 9; may die back and return from the roots in zones 5 and 6.
