Sourced originally from the noted citrus enthusiast Tom McClendon, Citrumelo 'Dallas' is a cold-hardy hybrid between the rugged trifoliate orange, Poncirus trifoliata, and a grapefruit. From that unlikely pairing comes a vigorous small tree that carries the trifoliate's toughness and a good measure of grapefruit character in the fruit.

The fruits are large and round, with a thick, textured rind and strikingly big seeds, and the flavor is bold, tart, and unmistakably citrus. Too sharp for most palates straight from the branch, the fruit comes into its own in the kitchen: with a little sugar and some patience, 'Dallas' makes a fine marmalade, a bright syrup, or a zesty base for cocktails. This is a plant for the adventurous grower rather than the fruit bowl, and a rare one at that.

In the garden, 'Dallas' rewards gardeners who want to push citrus north. Hardier than true grapefruit, the tree will hold in southern gardens where tender citrus cannot, and takes happily to a large container that can be moved under cover for hard freezes. Give full sun, sharp drainage, and shelter from cold winter wind, and site where the fragrant spring blossom and the bold autumn fruit can both be enjoyed.

A rare, cold-hardy citrus for the adventurous southern grower. Hardier than true grapefruit, 'Dallas' holds in gardens where tender citrus cannot, and takes happily to a large container that can be wheeled under cover for hard freezes. Give full sun, sharp drainage, and shelter from cold winter wind, in the ground in the warmest zones or in a pot farther north. Site where the fragrant spring bloom and the bold autumn fruit can both be enjoyed, and pair with other hardy citrus in a collector's edible planting.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Flower. Fragrant white citrus blossoms in spring, sweetly scented and loved by bees, a pretty prelude to the fruit.

Fruit. Large, round, thick-rinded, and full of big seeds, ripening in late fall; bold and tart, best cooked with sugar into marmalade, syrup, or a zesty cocktail base.

Foliage. Deep green, leathery leaves, partly shed in winter as the trifoliate parentage shows.

Care

Light. Full sun; give at least six to eight hours of direct sun a day, and a bright south-facing spot indoors or under glass.

Soil. Rich, free-draining sandy loam or a quality citrus mix; avoid heavy, wet clay.

Water. Keep evenly moist but never waterlogged, letting the top inch dry between waterings; ease off in winter, and check containers often in heat.

Pruning. Prune lightly in early spring to shape and to clear dead or crossing wood, and remove any rootstock suckers.

Harvest. Fruit ripens late fall into early winter, and the flavor sharpens as it matures; gather for marmalade, syrup, or zest.

Hardiness. USDA zones 7 to 9; hardy to about 15 degrees Fahrenheit once established, with container culture farther north.
