This Hibiscus relative is native to the Gulf Coast states and southward but widely grown elsewhere. In most of the South it is basically a perennial but it is more shrubby in the warmer sections. It is more cold hardy than the Large Turkscap (Malvaviscus arboreus) and sometimes self-seeds from the small white to red applelike fruits. Plant in a sunny bed or border with well-drained soil.

Overview:
Malvaviscus drummondii, commonly known as Drummond’s Turk’s Cap or Red Mallow, is a perennial shrub native to the southeastern United States and northeastern Mexico. This hardy and versatile plant is prized for its bright red, hibiscus-like flowers that attract pollinators, as well as its tolerance to a variety of growing conditions. Perfect for native plant gardens, pollinator habitats, and low-maintenance landscapes, this plant is a standout addition to any garden.

Light Requirements:

  • Partial Shade to Full Sun: Thrives in partial shade but will tolerate full sun if provided with adequate moisture. Partial shade is ideal for optimal growth and flowering, especially in hot climates.

Soil Requirements:

  • Soil Type: Prefers well-draining soil but is adaptable to sandy, loamy, or clay soils.
  • pH Preference: Neutral to slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0–7.5).
  • Moisture: While drought-tolerant once established, it prefers consistently moist soil for vigorous growth and flowering.

Watering:

  • Frequency: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep roots. Once established, water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Drought Tolerance: High, but supplemental watering during extended dry periods improves flowering.

Fertilization:

  • Frequency: Fertilize lightly in early spring and midsummer to encourage growth and blooms.
  • Type: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or organic compost.

Pruning:

  • Timing: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove dead or damaged branches.
  • Technique: Regular pruning can help maintain a compact form and encourage dense, healthy growth.

Temperature and Hardiness:

  • USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 7–11.
  • Temperature: Tolerates light frost but may die back in colder climates, regrowing from the base in spring. In frost-free areas, it remains evergreen.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Pests: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract aphids or whiteflies.
  • Diseases: Rarely affected by diseases; ensure proper spacing to avoid fungal issues in humid climates.

Mulching:

  • Apply a 2–3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the stem to prevent rot.

Growth Rate and Maintenance:

  • Growth Rate: Moderate; grows 3–6 feet tall and wide.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance, requiring occasional pruning and supplemental watering during dry periods.

Special Notes:

  • Pollinator Attractant: The red, coiled flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to wildlife gardens.
  • Wildlife Habitat: Its dense foliage provides shelter for small animals, while its fruits are enjoyed by birds.
  • Uses in Landscaping: Perfect for borders, naturalized areas, or as a hedge in partial shade.
