1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-9

Tea Olive is an evergreen Asian shrub that can become almost tree-like in mild climates. The leaves are about 3 inches long with small marginal teeth. It is highly prized in southern U.S. gardens for the deliciously fragrant small white flowers that appear in fall. In colder regions it is a prized greenhouse plant. Dr. Michael Dirr in his Manual of Woody Landscape Plants says: "Flowers appear over such a great time frame and are so fragrant that to not try the plant is to cheat one's garden." 'Conger Yellow' is a yellow-flowered and rather large leafed cultivar of this big evergreen shrub.

Flower/Foliage

Flower Description:

Osmanthus fragrans ‘Conger Yellow’ produces clusters of small, four-petaled, buttery-yellow flowers that bloom in late summer to fall, though sporadic flowering may occur throughout the year in warm climates. These blossoms emit a strong, sweet, apricot-like fragrance, making them a prized addition to gardens for their olfactory appeal. The flowers emerge along the leaf axils and contrast beautifully with the plant’s deep green foliage. Unlike many flowering shrubs, the fragrance is most pronounced in the evening, making it a favorite for moon gardens or spaces near patios and walkways.

Fruit Description:

After flowering, some Osmanthus fragrans varieties produce small, olive-like drupes, though fruiting is relatively rare in cultivated settings. When present, the fruits are round to oval, ripening from green to purplish-black over the course of several months. These fruits are not commonly ornamental and often go unnoticed due to their small size and sporadic development.

Foliage Description:

The evergreen leaves of ‘Conger Yellow’ are elliptical to lanceolate, measuring 2 to 4 inches long with a slightly leathery texture. They are deep green, glossy, and have finely serrated to entire margins, creating a lush, dense canopy. The foliage remains vibrant throughout the year, providing an excellent backdrop for the fragrant yellow flowers. This dense, attractive foliage makes Osmanthus fragrans a popular choice for hedging, screening, or as a specimen plant in gardens.

With its year-round greenery, fragrant blooms, and occasional ornamental fruit, Osmanthus fragrans ‘Conger Yellow’ is a versatile and rewarding addition to any landscape.

  • Soil: Grows best in moist, well-drained soils but tolerates heavy clay. Ensure the planting site has good drainage to prevent root rot. plants.ces.ncsu.edu

Watering:

  • Establishment: Water young plants regularly during their first growing season to establish a deep root system.
  • Mature Plants: Once established, 'Conger Yellow' is drought-tolerant but benefits from supplemental watering during prolonged dry periods. gardenia.net

Fertilization:

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Avoid late-season fertilization, as it can encourage tender growth susceptible to winter damage. thespruce.com

Pruning:

  • Minimal pruning is needed, as the plant naturally maintains a pleasing shape. If necessary, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Be cautious, as heavy pruning can reduce flowering. thespruce.com

Mulching:

  • Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally pest and disease-free. However, monitor for scale insects and aphids. If detected, treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. hgic.clemson.edu

Winter Care:

  • 'Conger Yellow' is hardy in Atlanta's climate. To protect roots during potential cold snaps, maintain a mulch layer and ensure the plant is well-watered before winter.
