The cinnamon-leaf viburnum is one of the great broadleaf evergreens of the genus, a substantial, dignified shrub from the mountain forests of western China, where mist gathers in the valleys and plants grow with quiet endurance. The species name cinnamomifolium means leaves like cinnamon, for the large, glossy, deeply triple-veined leaves that echo those of a true cinnamon tree, tooled and leathery as fine bookbinding. This is a plant that holds the line rather than blooms and fades with the hour.

The deep green, broad, oval leaves stay evergreen through every season, bringing shade-born structure and a subtle luster to the garden. Gardeners who know the smaller, tidier Viburnum davidii will recognize the family resemblance, but the cinnamon-leaf viburnum is more generous in form and far better suited to the soft winters of the American South, earning a place through form, depth, and resilience rather than through flash.

Come late spring, flat-topped clusters of small white flowers gather among the branches like lace pinned to an old coat, and in their wake come shiny blue-black fruits, modest and glossy and welcome to the birds that know where to look. Planted in rich, well-drained soil in dappled light or morning sun, the shrub rises eight to twelve feet, full and finely shaped.

Use the cinnamon-leaf viburnum as a strong evergreen hedge, a noble background, or a solitary specimen that anchors a quiet corner year after year. Hillier once called the species an imposing shrub when well grown, and so it proves, a plant of permanence and presence, still rare in cultivation and all the more worth seeking for it.

Design Notes

Use the cinnamon-leaf viburnum as a strong evergreen hedge, a noble background for showier plants, or a solitary specimen that anchors a shaded corner year-round. Native to the mountain forests of western China, the shrub wants rich, well-drained soil in dappled light or morning sun, and rewards patience with slow, dignified growth to eight or twelve feet. Pair with camellias, ferns, and other broadleaf evergreens, and value the large, glossy, triple-veined foliage as the main event, with the blue-black fruit a bonus for birds.
