1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-10

Pomegranate is a deciduous Middle-eastern shrub with small narrow leaves, orange flowers, and orange-red large edible fruits for which it has been cultivated since ancient times. Some ornamental varieties have showy double flowers and rarely set fruit. This selection was one we have grown from seed of a good fruiting specimen in upstate South Carolina and may represent the widely grown fruiting variety 'Wonderful'. Pomegranate should have a fertile, well-drained soil and a sunny location.

  • The flowers of Punica granatum are vibrant and showy, typically blooming in shades of scarlet red to orange.
  • They are tubular and crinkled, with a waxy texture and multiple layers of petals, measuring about 1–2 inches wide.
  • Flowers appear in clusters or individually, often on new growth, from late spring through summer.
  • Rich in nectar, they are highly attractive to bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.

Fruit:

  • The fruit is a round, leathery-skinned berry that varies in size from 2–5 inches in diameter, depending on the variety.
  • Its outer skin (rind) is thick, smooth, and ranges from yellowish-red to deep red.
  • Inside, the fruit is filled with hundreds of edible seeds (arils) surrounded by juicy, sweet-tart pulp that can be ruby-red, pink, or pale yellow.
  • Fruits ripen in fall, with mature pomegranates displaying a characteristic glossy finish.
  • Known for its rich antioxidant properties, the fruit has been a staple in culinary and medicinal traditions for centuries.

Foliage:

  • Leaves are glossy, lance-shaped, and typically grow in opposite pairs or small clusters along the branches.
  • They are a rich dark green during the growing season, measuring about 1–3 inches long.
  • In cooler climates, the foliage turns yellow before falling in autumn, as the plant is deciduous in most regions.
  • The dense, attractive foliage lends Punica granatum an ornamental appeal, even when it is not in bloom or fruiting.

Summary:

The combination of Punica granatum’s vivid red-orange flowers, ornamental and delicious fruit, and lush green foliage makes it a striking addition to any garden. Its beauty, coupled with its utility, has made it a cherished plant throughout history, symbolizing abundance and vitality.

Care Info

Read full care instruction manual here.

Punica granatum is a versatile and hardy deciduous shrub or small tree, native to the Mediterranean and Middle East. It is prized for its vibrant red flowers, attractive foliage, and nutritious, sweet-tart fruit. Adaptable to a variety of climates, it thrives in warm regions and is a favorite for both ornamental and edible gardens.

Sunlight:

  • Full sun is essential for optimal growth, flowering, and fruit production.
  • Requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Soil:

  • Thrives in well-drained soil with a sandy or loamy texture.
  • Tolerates a wide pH range, from slightly acidic to alkaline (pH 5.5–7.5).
  • Avoid heavy clay soils unless amended with organic matter or sand to improve drainage.

Watering:

  • Drought-tolerant once established but benefits from consistent moisture during the growing season.
  • Water deeply and infrequently, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Avoid overwatering, as overly wet soil can lead to root rot.

Fertilization:

  • Apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10 NPK) in early spring before new growth begins.
  • Repeat fertilization in mid-summer for young plants to encourage strong growth.
  • Avoid over-fertilizing, as excessive nitrogen can reduce fruit production.

Pruning:

  • Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
  • Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain airflow and reduce disease risk.
  • For fruit production, focus on maintaining a vase shape or open center to allow sunlight penetration.

Temperature & Hardiness:

  • Hardy in USDA zones 8–10.
  • Ideal for areas with hot, dry summers and cool winters.
  • Protect from frost in colder regions, especially young plants. Use mulch or frost blankets for insulation.

Pests & Diseases:

  • Generally resistant to pests but may occasionally encounter aphids, whiteflies, or mealybugs. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Watch for fungal diseases like leaf spot or root rot in overly humid or wet conditions.
  • Proper airflow and well-drained soil help prevent most issues.

Fruit Production:

  • Fruits develop best in areas with long, warm growing seasons.
  • Flowers appear in late spring to summer, and fruits ripen 5–7 months later, typically in fall.
  • Regular watering during fruit set is essential to prevent splitting.

Container Growing:

  • Pomegranates adapt well to pots due to their shallow root systems.
  • Use a large container with drainage holes and a sandy, well-draining potting mix.
  • Repot every 2–3 years or as needed to refresh soil and prevent root-bound conditions.

Propagation:

  • Propagate by cuttings (preferred for retaining cultivar traits) or by seed.
  • Hardwood cuttings taken in late winter root well when placed in moist soil or sand.

Special Notes:

  • Punica granatum is a wonderful addition to edible landscapes, Mediterranean gardens, or xeriscapes.
  • Attracts pollinators like bees and hummingbirds with its bright, nectar-rich flowers.
  • Cultivars like 'Wonderful' are ideal for fruit production, while ornamental varieties like 'Nana' are valued for compact size and aesthetics.

By following these care instructions, Punica granatum will flourish as a beautiful and productive addition to your garden, providing vibrant flowers, delicious fruit, and an enduring symbol of abundance and fertility.
