This yellow-flowered hybrid butterflybush (B. globosa x B. davidii) is better and more vigorous than 'Sungold'. It was obtained by Dr. Mike Dirr from Crathes Castle Garden in Scotland and named 'Honeycomb'. It was purchased as the variety 'E.H. Wilson,' but it turned out to be a very different yellow-flowered butterflybush which performed exceptionally well in Georgia trials flowering as late as Thanksgiving.

Flower/Foliage

Flowers:

The Honeycomb Butterfly Bush produces striking clusters of creamy yellow to golden-orange flowers, forming rounded panicles that resemble miniature globes. The blooms are highly fragrant, exuding a sweet honey-like scent that attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds in abundance. Unlike many Buddleia varieties, ‘Honeycomb’ continues to flower prolifically from midsummer through late fall, with blossoms appearing on both new and old wood. This extended bloom period provides a long-lasting nectar source for pollinators, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.

Fruit:

As a hybrid, Buddleia × weyeriana ‘Honeycomb’ produces sparse to no viable seed, making it a more controlled and non-invasive option compared to other butterfly bushes. If any seed capsules develop, they are small and inconspicuous, typically forming in place of spent flowers late in the season. However, the plant’s sterile nature ensures energy is directed toward continuous flowering rather than aggressive self-seeding.

Foliage:

The foliage of ‘Honeycomb’ consists of elongated, lance-shaped leaves with a soft, slightly fuzzy texture. Leaves emerge in a muted green hue, developing into a medium to deep green as the season progresses. The semi-deciduous nature of the shrub means it retains its leaves well into autumn in warmer climates but may shed them in colder regions. The foliage provides an elegant, slightly arching structure that pairs beautifully with the bright floral display, creating a lush and textured garden presence.

Care Info

Planting Location:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun; ensure the plant receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Soil: Prefers average, well-drained soils. While adaptable to various soil types—including chalk, clay, loam, and sand—it's crucial to avoid waterlogged conditions, as the plant is intolerant of wet feet.

Watering:

  • Once established, the Honeycomb Butterfly Bush is drought-tolerant. Regular watering is essential during the initial growth period to help the plant establish a strong root system. Afterward, water moderately, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Pruning:

  • Timing: Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering. This variety blooms on both new and old wood, so timely pruning will not sacrifice blossoms.
  • Method: Cut back the plant to maintain a compact, bushy shape. Every 2-3 years, consider a more severe pruning to rejuvenate the shrub and prevent legginess. Regular deadheading of spent flowers can also promote continuous blooming throughout the season.

Fertilizing:

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins. This will provide essential nutrients to support robust flowering and overall plant health.

Mulching:

  • Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the shrub to conserve soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth. Keep mulch a few inches away from the stem to prevent rot.

Winter Care:

  • In USDA Hardiness Zones 5 and 6, the Honeycomb Butterfly Bush may die back to the ground during winter. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base in late fall to protect the roots from freezing temperatures. The plant typically regrows vigorously from the roots in spring.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally resistant to deer and rabbits. While relatively pest-free, it's advisable to monitor for common garden pests and address any issues promptly.

Landscape Uses:

  • Ideal for shrub borders, cottage gardens, and butterfly gardens. Its attractive flowers make it a standout specimen, and it's also suitable for container planting. The blooms are excellent for cutting and adding to floral arrangements.

By following these care guidelines, your Honeycomb Butterfly Bush will thrive, providing delightful blooms and attracting pollinators to your garden throughout the growing season.
