Small and medium shrubs are the compact, woody plants that sit comfortably below eye level, the fillers and finishers of a planting. Big enough to give year-round structure, small enough to tuck almost anywhere, they are the most useful and most used of all garden plants. Flower, foliage, berry, and form all come in this size, which is why a well-made border leans on shrubs like these more than on anything else.

In the landscape they do the connective work. Massed, they become low hedges, foundation plantings, and drifts of seasonal bloom; placed singly, they anchor a corner or mark a doorway; layered in front of larger shrubs, they carry a bed down gracefully to the ground. Because they come in every texture and season of interest, they let a gardener compose plantings that hold together and change through the year.

We grow these shrubs heavily because they suit real gardens, of a size to plant, move, and manage, and because a diverse shrub layer feeds and shelters a great deal of wildlife at exactly the height most pollinators and small birds use. Many are tough, undemanding, and generous with flower or fruit, giving a lot back for very little care.
