Flowers:
In mid to late spring, this azalea produces clusters of 3 to 13 funnel-shaped flowers, each measuring about 1.5 inches (3-4 cm) in diameter. The blossoms are predominantly white, often with a subtle pink flush, and emit a strong musky fragrance. Notably, the flowers often bloom before or simultaneously with the emergence of new leaves. ​

Foliage:
The leaves are elliptic to obovate, measuring up to 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) in length, and display a blue-green hue. They have bristly-ciliate margins with blunt to rounded tips, providing a lush backdrop to the spring blooms. ​

Fruit:
After flowering, Rhododendron atlanticum produces elongated brown capsules containing numerous small seeds. These capsules mature in the fall and can persist into winter, adding subtle interest to the shrub's appearance.

Planting Location:
Choose a site that offers partial shade to full sun. While coastal azalea can tolerate full sun, it thrives best in partial shade, especially in hotter climates, to prevent leaf scorch. Ensure the location is protected from strong winter winds and late spring frosts, which can damage flowers and foliage. ​

Soil Requirements:
Plant in well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal. Amending the soil with organic matter can enhance fertility and structure. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot, so avoid areas with heavy, waterlogged soils. ​

Watering:
Maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, to support the shallow, fibrous root system. Avoid waterlogged conditions, as coastal azalea does not thrive in wet, poorly aerated soils. Mulching with organic materials like pine straw or bark helps conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. ​

Fertilization:
Apply a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring. Avoid excessive use of lime or alkaline fertilizers, as they can harm the plant. Fertilizing should be done in April or May, but avoid fertilizing after July to prevent tender growth susceptible to winter damage. ​

Pruning:
Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead or injured branches after flowering to maintain shape and health. Avoid heavy pruning, as it can stress the plant. ​

Pest and Disease Management:
Monitor for common pests such as aphids, borers, lace bugs, leafhoppers, mealybugs, mites, nematodes, scale, thrips, and whiteflies. Diseases like canker, crown rot, root rot, leaf spot, rust, and powdery mildew can occur, especially in poorly drained soils. Implement good cultural practices, such as proper spacing for air circulation and avoiding overhead watering, to minimize issues. This plant is also frequently damaged by deer.
