Heptacodium miconioides

Heptacodium miconioides, the seven-son flower, is a large, fountain-shaped shrub or small tree that saves its best for the tail of the year, when most of the garden is winding down. In late summer, tiered clusters of small, fragrant, creamy-white flowers open in whorls of seven, the arrangement behind both the botanical and common names. Bees and butterflies work the late flowers gratefully, in a season when little else is on offer.

Then comes the real surprise. As the white petals fall, the calyces behind them swell and flush from rose-pink to cherry-red, holding a second, longer-lasting display well into autumn, brighter by far than the flowers that preceded it. And when the leaves finally drop, a third season begins: the bark peels in long tan and brown strips, dressing the winter stems in quiet texture. Few plants pack three seasons into one frame so generously.

The seven-son flower is a tree now rare in the wild of central China, first collected by the great plant hunter Ernest Wilson in 1907 and then, remarkably, lost to Western gardens for more than seventy years. Seed gathered by the 1980 Sino-American Botanical Expedition finally brought the plant into cultivation, where a rare toughness, adaptability, and long season of beauty quickly won a wide following. The sole species in the genus, Heptacodium has no close garden relatives for comparison.

Grow Heptacodium miconioides in full sun to part shade in almost any well-drained soil, with even moisture through the establishing years, and expect fast, easy growth into a shrub of fifteen to twenty feet. Leave the plant multi-stemmed for a broad shrub, or limb the plant up to reveal the peeling bark as a small tree; either way the plant earns a spot as a specimen or a late-season pollinator anchor. For three seasons of interest on one tough, low-fuss plant, the seven-son flower is hard to beat.
