Rhododendron flammeum (speciosum)

The Oconee azalea is the flame azalea of the lowlands, and for a Southern gardener that difference matters. Where the mountain flame azalea pines for cool Appalachian summers, this Piedmont cousin was born to the heat, thriving in the clay hills and stream bluffs of middle Georgia and South Carolina and taking the humidity of the Deep South in stride. The reward is the same fire in the flower: bright orange to orange-red trusses, sometimes shading to salmon or gold, opening in mid-spring.

The Latin flammeum means flame-colored, and the older name speciosum means showy, and both fit. The funnel-shaped flowers are non-fragrant, in the way of the orange-red azaleas, but they need no scent to draw a crowd: swallowtails and other large butterflies work the trusses, hummingbirds hover among them, and the specialist bee Andrena cornelli times its whole life to the bloom. Oconee azalea takes the common name from the Oconee country of the Georgia Piedmont.

Give the Oconee azalea the classic azalea site adjusted for the South: part shade or dappled light, and moist but sharply drained, acidic, humus-rich soil, and the plant settles into a rounded shrub of six to eight feet. Hardy through USDA zones 6 to 9 and genuinely heat-tolerant, this is one of the best native azaleas for a hot-climate garden, blooming better with a little shade and asking only that the roots never bake or drown.

One honest caution rides along with the beauty: like all the azaleas and rhododendrons, every part of the plant carries grayanotoxins and is poisonous if eaten, so site the shrub away from where children or livestock might browse it. Grown well, Oconee azalea is a treasure for a woodland garden, a native or pollinator planting, or a part-shade border, a heat-proof native that brings mountain-azalea fire to gardens where the true mountain species would sulk.
