Rhododendron periclymenoides

Pinxterbloom is the wild azalea of the eastern woods, a hardy native that hangs its soft pink flowers along the branches in mid-spring, just before the leaves catch up. The funnel-shaped blooms, pale pink to nearly white, throw long curving stamens well past the petals, giving the whole shrub a hazy, spidery lightness, and carry a faint sweet scent on a warm day. Few native shrubs say spring so plainly.

The names are a small history lesson. Dutch colonists in old New Netherland called the shrub pinxterbloom, after Pinkster, their word for Pentecost, the Whitsun season when the flowers open, and the plant has answered to it ever since. Gardeners also call it wild honeysuckle, and both the folk name and the botanical epithet periclymenoides, meaning honeysuckle-like, point to the resemblance of the long-tubed flowers, though pinxterbloom is no relation at all to true honeysuckle. The old name nudiflorum, naked-flowered, remembered the bloom that comes before the leaves.

A plant of the Appalachians, the Piedmont, and the coastal woods from New England to Georgia, pinxterbloom is among the hardiest of the native azaleas, dependable through USDA zones 4 to 8. The shrub suckers gently into a loose colony four to eight feet high, and asks for the usual native-azalea comforts: light or dappled shade, and moist but well-drained, acidic, humus-rich soil. Close kin to the sweeter-scented Piedmont azalea, Rhododendron canescens, pinxterbloom carries the family north and blooms a little more quietly.

One honest caution: like all the azaleas and rhododendrons, every part of the plant carries grayanotoxins and is poisonous if eaten, so keep the shrub away from where children or livestock might browse it. Otherwise pinxterbloom is an easy, generous native for a woodland garden, a shaded border, a streambank, or a pollinator planting, where the pink spring flowers feed swallowtails, hummingbirds, and bees at the very start of the season.
