Luzon viburnum is one of the quiet unknowns of Southern gardening, a handsome large shrub grown around Houston for years and almost nowhere else in the United States. Woodlanders collected this plant in the Houston area, where the species had already proven durable and undemanding in Gulf Coast heat. Viburnum luzonicum comes from open forest, scrub, and roadside thickets across southern China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines, and the epithet points to Luzon, largest of the Philippine islands, from which Robert Allen Rolfe described the species at Kew.
The leaves are elliptic to ovate, three to six inches long, and variable enough from plant to plant that a hedge grown from seed reads as a texture rather than a repetition. Foliage looks broadly like arrowwood, Viburnum dentatum. In the Deep South the leaves commonly hang on through winter, coloring red-purple and holding until new growth pushes them off in spring; farther north the shrub behaves as a straightforward deciduous plant. Flat white cymes open in mid to late spring, followed by small round drupes that ripen red and then darken to black, sparsely borne but handsome against late-season foliage.
A word of honesty about the flowers: viburnum bloom in this group carries a musty edge at close range, a pollination strategy rather than a fault. Sited as a screen or a boundary hedge, the scent is a non-issue and the display is generous. Growth is fast, the frame is dense, twiggy, and rounded, and the shrub takes shearing well, which makes Luzon viburnum genuinely useful in zone 8 and 9 gardens where most viburnums either sulk in the heat or stand bare by December.
Give this viburnum fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter, in full sun or half a day of shade. Established plants tolerate real drought. Pollinators work the flowers, songbirds take the fruit, and there are no serious pest or disease problems on record. Best in the Deep South and along the Gulf Coast, where a large shrub that stays furnished through winter is worth a great deal.

All our plants are sold in 1-gallon sizes, though the height of each plant can vary depending on its growth rate and seasonality, typically ranging from 1/2 to 2.5 feet.
Each plant is carefully packaged with its roots enclosed in a secure plastic bag containing moist soil, forming a compact root ball. To ensure safe transport, the box is padded with recycled newspaper, providing both stability and eco-friendly protection from weather during shipping.
